Solved: Internet has stopped working
This is happening about every hour to my laptop. It is a new occurance within the last week or so. I am on a hard line so the router doesn't come into play. What should I look for to help this situation?

would you provide some details

would you post the following tests when its working OK and then repeat ALL the tests when it disconnects and make sure you also tells which tests posted are for what condition

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
post back results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
Quote:
For your information only
these tests will check various stages of the connection, the first ping test, ping default gateway checks to see if you still have a connection to the router the next two
Ping google.com & Ping 209.183.226.152 tests the connection to internet , one by name and one by number which checks that the dns is working

explain

make and model of the router
how are you connected to the internet

What firewall or security suite do you currently have on the PC - or ever had in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG etc

ok - norton and zone alarm can all cause this type of issue

so even if you uninstalled norton it can still cause issue
so you need to use the removal tool

do that first and then look at zone alarm
--------------------------------------------------------------

Norton Removal Tool
I would recommend that you restart the PC and run the removal tool for a second time - I have found instances where the removal tool needs to be run twice to fully remove all traces of norton and symantec from the PC
http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_...080710133834EN

All Versions - The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2010/2009/2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products, Norton 360 and Norton SystemWorks 12.0 from your computer.

--------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------

Zonealarm Removal Tool
The latest versions have the uninstalled included in the installation
run the ZA uninstaller from Start > Programs > ZoneAlarm

windows 7
https://support.zonealarm.com/index....indows-7-64bit

If possible, first try to run the universal uninstaller found at the link below. This tool will remove all ZoneAlarm data from your computer: When the download box pops up, choose Save, in the next box choose Save to Desktop. Restart the computer before running the tool.

Solved
The issue was that I was running on a hard line but the laptop was also trying to pick up wireless. I tried to turn off wireless but there were 2 wireless programs installed. I don't know how or why but anyway, once the HP one was removed, the other one stayed off and it was corrected.
