I can't access the Facebook website
Hi Techguys,

Firstly, thank you for the great site, so glad to find somewhere I can find some help

I've had problems trying to access the Facebook website on my laptop since December 2012, something that seems to be common to many of your followers. I've read through many of your responses similar to my post, but have no luck with any of them yet :/ so I apologise for yet another request on this topic.

I'm currently accessing the internet by tethering my mobile phone to my laptop and have also had problems accessing Facebook on my HTC also.

Operating System is Windows 7 Home Premium.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

do all devices on your network have issues - if so then it maybe a router / ISP issue

we need to confirm the extent of the issue - before we speed off down incorrect areas

so
Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if you have a separate modem, the make and exact model of the modem.

how many devices on the network -
do they all fail to connect to facebook

will any of the devices work on other networks, cafes etc ?

Hi,

Hope the following info assists -

Make and exact model of the router - I found the gateway IP address but when I typed it into the internet browser it failed to come up with an authentification box. It just provided google search results.

Make and exact model of the modem - I've been using my HTC Wildfire mobile phone as a Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot so, I don't have a modem (?)

How many devices on the network - two - my computer and a media device (HTC Portable HotSpot).

Will any of the devices work on other networks, cafes etc? I've never used either device on other networks before.

Other information... Something that maybe may be related? When I attempt to log-in to Facebook using my HTC phone I get either of the following results:

a) Unsuccessful log in - which happens the majority of the time. I will get the message -
'Login Failed. Sorry, an unexpected error occurred.
Please try again later.
(SSL handshake timed out)'
b) Occasional successful log in - which isn't regularly. I will get a blank page trying to load or, an old newsfeed that is unable to refresh and will come back with 'Network Error.'

can you just describe the kit again

HTC Wildfire mobile phone which you have setup to work as a Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot for access to the mobile/3G network

and the 2nd device is a PC - which is tethered to the phone as a hotspot

have i got that correct ?

the common thing here seems to be the 3G/mobile network - if the phone has issues

who do you have the mobile contract with?

Yep, that's right (for the kit).

The contract is with Virgin, which uses the Optus network.

It may be the mobile network, but if this is the case why am I able to use the internet for all other websites on both devices?

SSL handshake sounds like a security issue to facebook, which always seem to have issues. I would also suggest to talk to Virgin
