Unhappy Yahoo, Hotmail other e-mail loads s-l-o-w-l-y
Even typing this here, it is impossilby slow: I type, but the characters don't show up. In Yahoo, I have to wait approx. 7 secs per CHARACTER to see anything; I deleted some files somewhere in my pc, bthat I thought I wouldn't need: I somehow had gotten a massaive aount of sex ad popoups on my ppc, so maybe I dleeted something when I was clearing all that out... Anyway, I can use my word porcessing okay, but ANY of my e-mial accts: Hotmail, Yahoo, Onebox, Ureadh: they all are very, very, very slow. In ONe box, when I click on the folders,k the wrong folder shows up, or the folder contents dosnt' show at all. (Sorry\ for the spelling errors: I can't see what I'm typing here....)
Anyway, WHAT THE HECK COULD BE GOING ON??? Do I need more memory, or...???

(Thaniking everyone in advance for their help..)

You may find it useful to download Spybot Search & Destroy to clear out spyware that seems to be infesting your system. I just checked it was compatible with Win95 - 64 mb Ram is recommended.

Go here :

http://www.spywareinfo.com

Download Spybot. Then run it. See what it turns up on this first use. But once you have it remember to keep checking for updates.

If you need help with what to delete then post back here.

Hello Diana,

We need to have a look at what's running in the background. Please do this:

Go HERE and download then install "msconfig.exe". (Scroll down toward bottom of link and you'll find it under Utilities and Miscellaneous).

Next go back to the spyware info.com site and download the "startup list". Unzip, install, run it and copy then paste the results back here in a reply.

Thanks,

Kilowatt

Web problems: typing text appears s--l--o--w--l--y; scrolling almost impossible.
So all this happened after a porn site decided to get into the inner confines of my pc. I deleted all the files that I ~thought~ had to do with anything porn-related, and yes, I messed with my registry keys. Installed and ran a spy-ware program; re-installed IE 5.5; updated my video driver. Still, whenever I type anything in a web page, such as *here* in this text box, or any of my e-mail accts., the cursor moves, but no characters are visible forEVER. Also, any page that has lots of graphics of any kind, scrolling just about doesn't happen = cursor will pull on the scroll button, but the button doesn't move until zzzzz...

On a less annoying/crucial note, whenever I re-start my pc, Explorer loads. How did THAT happen??? How do I stop it?

Thanking you in advance-

Diana, I've merged your two threads, so we can avoid duplication.

Frankly I don't see anything there to account for the behavior you are describing.

Have you downloaded msconfig according to the suggestion offered? If you have try running it (Start>Run> msconfig) and uncheck the "Startup Group" on the General page. See if all the symptoms continue.

Are you continuing to get porn pop-ups after running Spybot?

We also should have you remove this:

[IntSOFTEC Class]
InProcServer32 = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IT.DLL
CODEBASE = http://213.229.160.209/dialers/it.cab

To do so, open Internet Options and under Settings > View Objects, find that file and right click on it and select Remove.

Are the symptoms only evident when online and/or using e-mail? Are you using Outlook Express at the time?

I think it would be a good idea to do a DOS based cleanup of temporary files and the History cache. Here are instructions:

Click Start>Shutdown>Restart in MS-DOS mode.

At the c:\windows\> prompt enter each bold line:

smartdrv
deltree tempor~1
deltree temp
deltree history
deltree locals~1\tempor~1
exit

(you may get an error message on this last one (locals~1), just skip to "exit" if you do, it just means you don't have that directory)

Enter smartdrv first or the process will take a very long time. For each deltree, confirm by entering 'y' if the target directory is correct.

You may be having problems specific to Outlook Express, probably not easy to resolve without SFC in Win95, but have a look here to see what seems to apply:

i have known RNAAPP to cause some problems in win95.
RNAAPP (Remote Network Access Application) is a core executable for Microsoft Windows Dial-Up Networking.

To remove RNAAPP first press Ctrl-Alt-Del and end task this program. Reboot your computer.

try this out and let's see if that works

Unhappy EVERYTHING IS WORSE!!!
AAUUUGGHH!!!
I have to type this response in Notepad, otherwise I can't see it.
Right.
I did EVERYTHING that EVERYONE SUGGESTED, and it's turned things WORSE, as if that could happen!
Now, when Explorer loads, the page is half blank as it loads; it loads ultra-super slow; it takes MORE than FOREVER to switch between windows; I can still barely scroll, and the text showing up is the same: S-L-O-W.

Okay, so, NOW WHAT???

(And this ONLY happens when I'm on-line, and I'm using a BUNCH of different e-mails, but not OE.)

[If I decide to format my hard drive to start over, would I just have to save the files that I like, and not worry about the other million-billion files I have in there???]

It's very puzzling, but could you try this as a test: Go to System Properties (you can right click on My Computer and select Properties) > Graphics > Performance.

Put the hardware acceleration slider down at None and restart. Scrolling will slower than "normal" without acceleration, but it might be better than what you are getting. If there is some imporvement in symptoms, bump the slider up one notch at a time and test at each level.

A format wipes out everything, you can save data files as they can be opened by the programs they are associated with if those programs themselves are reinstalled. You might just want to try an overinstall first.

Concerning your "Explorer" issue, this may apply to Win95 as well:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q228502

Test the issue with a Safe Mode start to see if it still occurs.

Yes, everything is getting STILL worse.
I had tried the graphics accellerator adjust previously; didn't work then; now, when I try to compose in Yahoo!, the window freezes = have to exit.

I'm thinking about a clean wipe cuz I ~OBVIOUSLY~ have SOMETHING(s) going on in my PC that the TOO MANY HOURS I've spent on "fixes" haven't helped. Just reinstalling would leave all those other "things" in there, no?

The second part of you're query is simple:
Explorer is an integral part of Windows, which governs the way you work on you're PC (ie, the windows, the pull down menus et alia). Shutting it down will shut Windows down. It is NOT Internet Explorer. It is one of two things that must be running when you use Windows, the other being SysTray.

As for the first problem, I'm not sure what it is. One question though, is it only online this happens, or does it happen offline too?

Hope this has helped a bit.

Yes a reinstall would only replace Windows system files and related registry entries.

It's just hard to see where this problem is coming from. If there were serious ram faults you'd probably be seeing some blue screens. However the symptoms do in some respects resemble problems due to overheating. In such cases the processor may clock down and slow the system to reduce the heating.

Have you had the cover off recently, checked the fan, and blown out any accumulated dust?

Might this be an AMD k6/2 by any chance? -- they seem to have more heat related issues than most.

Tom:

Thanks for checking in on my problems.
No, the offline stuff doesn't happen: only in text boxes on the web.
I think you misunderstood what I was saying about Explorer loading: when I restart my pc, it tries to connect to the 'net, so the stupid Explorer screen comes up. This only started happening yesterday, after I deleted some stuff that some people recommended that I delete...
