Outlook Express Error
Hello! Well...whenever I try to get my e-mail, I get the following error:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.charter.net', Server: 'pop.charter.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10065, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I'm lost...what do I do here???

Thank you!

I'm not really an OE person, but make sure you have the correct address in the accounts setup for both incoming and outgoing.

I don't know what Windows version you are using, but do a search for a hosts file, and if you find one with no extension, not hosts.sam or lmhosts.sam, open it in Notepad and see if there are any entries there for your mail account address and remove them.

If you can't tell, just rename the whole file ghosts -- it is not required.

Since this is a secure sockets layer you are having the problem with, you will need to troubleshoot that as well.

Again, knowing the OS would help here:

for XP

If the problem persists, check with your ISP to see if they are having problems with their server. They should also be able to ensure you are configured correctly.

The hosts file will be in c:\windows then, if it exists. An active one will not have an extension such as .sam. It is used by some applications to associate domain names with IPs. When the IPs change you cannot connect to the servers. It is remotely possible that you have such an entry for your mail server.

But this is something you definitely want to check with your ISP on. They will help you ensure you have OE properly configured to connect to their mail server.

I am probably going to give you the most useful post.

Try calling your IP service and have them walk your thru an install of Outlook Express as it relates to both your little world and theirs.

Most OE problems are local as in the IP area or how you have set up your accounts.

Any problems, my first response is to look at my particular setups, next is to call my IP and walk thru the lastest procedures for setting up a valid operating account that is normally your "default" account.

Outlook Express is horribly "Local" in many problems and solutions. Good communications and talking to the IP first, is my general solution for an email service that doesn't work in any fashion.

If you can't solve it " Local ", this forum is next to try for help.

Call your IP (Internet Provider), tell them your email account (OE) Ask them to walk you thru a reinstall procedure. Normally this fixes the problem.

If that's the only one, ignore it as it is only a "sample" file.

Try going to your ISP's website and seeing what smtp server name should be entered in Outlook Express Tools > Accounts (pop3) > Servers. Make sure the e-mail domain is correct as well.

You may need to contact them personally.
