Unhappy search engines won't work
I have a problem with search engine websites. For the past 3 years, I could always access Yahoo and Lycos. But, about 3 days ago, I noticed that I could not get Lycos (time out error), and for Yahoo, I can get their page, but when I submit a search criteria, the operation times out. Also, in Yahoo, when I click on the "advanced" search options and/or the "preferences" search options, I get the time out screen (which seems ridiculous). I am able to click on other links in yahoo, like mail, personals, shopping, etc. I have windows XP, on a pentium 4 system, Dell, using microsoft internet explorer 6. I have noticed that when I surf for lycos, in the task window at the bottom of the screen, it says something about starting a java applet. About a week ago, I re-installed/installed Java, because I could not play some games on the MSN gaming website (text twist). It was something to do with the virtual machine? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Hi stampfel, and welcome to TSG..

The first thing to do would be to download 'Hijack This!' from http://www.spywareinfo.com/files/hijackthis.zip
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.

This will give us a rundown of what’s going on in your PC. One of us here will be glad to analyse it for you. Don’t fix anything yourself yet, as a lot of the stuff on that list will be harmless or required.

Please do the following ,

Download CWShredder www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip
Close all browser windows , check the Taskbar for minimized windows as well , Run CWShredder.

Scan Hijack This , put a check in the following entries and hit ''Fix Checked'' ,

Also do:

Open Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> delete cookies, delete files (select off-line content), clear history. Then click ok and exit Internet Explorer.
