Solved: Can't connect but can ping...
Ok...A friend asked me to look at their laptop because they lost their internet connection last week. It used to go - now it doesn't. It is a broadband connection.
He said he and his colleagues were given a program from his school (he's a teaher) and he said that is the only thing that he different on it.
Obviously, I considered that it may have been the program, but he doesn't know what it is (grrr..).
I tried a lot of things - even tried setting up a new connection - but it didn't work.
I called his provider and found that some of his settings were incorrect, so we reset them.
I can ping out and recieve so that's not an issue. I just keep getting 'Page Cannot Be Displayed'.
The ISP said that they have done everything they can because it is recieving their signal etc. so they suggested I call microsoft.
I'm sure it is something really simple hat I have missed...can anyone see it?
His OS is WinXP Pro, with a D-link DSL 302-G ADSL modem. Hes using his standard IE.
The other thing is, his sytem is incredibly slow...I originally thought it may be a virus or something similar, which may be linked to his IE problem, but ran his eTrust AV and his Ad-aware and they both came up clean.
I checked his HJT log and it too looked clean (I'm not an expert, but it looked ok to me).
Hopefully I'm gonna kick myself when someone comes up with the solution...
So...i just can't get the net. I tried setting up a connection, resetting his settings and ringing his provider.
Cheers
LD.

Can you post the Hijack this log.?

When you say he can ping, can he ping URLs, IP addresses or both?

God, I hate toshiba logs, they stick so much in.

Anyway, the problem is that IE is set to run through a proxy

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy.arowhenua.school.nz:3128

In Internet Options, go to Connections, LAN settings and untick Use a proxy server

Yup I hate these logs too!
Ok, that worked..thanks! (I hate it when I don't check the obvious!).
I'm curious though, as to why it went before, considering it was configured this way in the first place and then stopped!
This is kinda frustrating still.
Odd....(to me) as I have never really dealt with that before.

The proxy seems to have been added by the school software, so possibly the proxy is down, or possibly a firewall is blocking the port, port 3128, is not normally used for web transfer

Hmmm...but the proxy wouldn't go down for the week as the school would need it up. I checked the firewall too (one thing I did remember to do).
Yeah I wondered about that port...not realy my area of expertise though lol.
Oh well...it's up, thanks again dugg.
I'll close this thread off in a couple of minutes...
