I believe you are receiving the error message because you are not getting online. Are you able to get online with another browser? If you are, then maybe the update may have corrupted your install or your profile. See if you can go on line with Firefox in safe mode. Not on your computer safe mode, but Firefox safe mode. If you are able to go online, then you probably have an extension that is effecting the updated Firefox.

Firefox safe mode should be on the Start menu. Start> All Programs> Mozilla Firefox > Firefox Safe Mode. If it's not there, you can start it from:
Start> Run> type: firefox.exe -safe-mode then OK.
If Firefox works in safe mode, then it will probably be an extension that is corrupt or incompatible with the update.

You may need to reinstall Firefox. If you want to try creating a new profile first, to see if the profile is corrupt, before you reinstall. Follow the directions to create a new Firefox Profile. If the new profile doesn't work, then you will probably have to reinstall Firefox.

Do you have a firewall that might be blocking Firefox? In Firefox: check Tools, Options, on the General tab> click the Connection Settings button and see if Direct connection to the internet is checked.
If you uninstall, your profile is not deleted and if it is corrupt, it will still be corrupt. You will have to go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles (In Windows XP)
In this folder are your bookmarks, copy them to some place on your computer (desktop or My Documents folder) so you can keep them to place in the new install. Then uninstall Firefox and delete the profile folder. Reinstall a new download for Firefox. See if it works, and if it does, then replace your bookmarks with the one in the new install.

Well, if it isn't a firewall blocking and a new install doesn't work. I am out of ideas, sorry. Maybe someone else has something in mine.

I've just incurred the same problem using firefox 1.5.0.1, and I'm stumped !

Same symptoms as the original post.. only firefox can't connect to anything! IE and other inet apps are fine.

I've been thru the mozilla troubleshooting guide.. and gone so far as ripping off every (visible) reference to mozilla or firefox on the disk and in the registry..

Anyone... ?
