Yes. I'm not sure if disconnected is the word or not. I can still ping sites. It's interesting that the error that Netscape gives is, "connection refused", like it's a permissions thing. I can't even get to my router using the private address (192.168.0.1) which should open the router's administration window. I've tried turning of Windows XP firewall. But it makes sense that it's not a problem when I'm in safe mode because I guess the firewall and antivirus software isn't running. It seems that after about 10 minutes, something decides that all sites are untrustworthy (or I am) and blocks me from getting out. Again, I am connected because I can get replies when I ping sites such as microsoft.com and yahoo.com. In fact, the lady from HP was using a remote control package to work on my machine and while she was connected, the browser stopped working, yet she was able to continue her session. I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

Download the HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager
  • Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
  • Click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

I don't think I had a host file before this. I followed the directions and haven't seen a difference. In addition, it looks like I've successfully removed LEXBCES as well. Here's the latest HJT:

The next thing I would suggest is testing a new profile to see if the same problem exists.

Tried the new profile but that didn't work either. I finally decided to punt.....just completed a system recovery and the problem is gone. This time...the bug wins.
