Help to remove box with Chinese/Japanese Characters on Startup
When I start my computer and prior to the Windows welcome screen, a box appears appears on the screen with about 8-10 Japanese or Chinese characters on the blue bar at the top left corner and usually about 3 characters in the white box underneath. It will not go away until I click <okay>. Then the box goes away and the computer begins loading programs as usual. Any ideas on how to get rid of this annoyance? HP Computer running XP with McAfee Security Center and Max Secure Registry Cleaner.

Take a look at your startup programs to see if anything unusual or suspicious is starting.

Startup Control Panel
Startup Control Panel (Exe version for Vista)
Emsa Startup Manager

Ran Emsa Startup Manager and didn't see anything unusual.

The box with the characters appears before Windows boots up. There is a totally black screen behind the box. The characters in the box and on the blue bar change each time the computer is starting. I right clicked on the box and the following options are only viewable and grayed out: Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete. The following options are functional: Select All, Right to Left Reading Order, Show Unicode Control Characters, Insert Unicode Control Character. If I right click on Insert Unicode Control Character, the following options display:
LRM left to right mark
RLM
ZWJ
ZWNJ
LRE
RLE
LRO
RLO
PDF
NADS
NODS
***
ISS
AAFS
IAFS
RS
US

If I click the box with the x in it to close the box, it will NOT close. The only option to get rid of it is to click okay and then the windows welcome screen appears.

Look under your Applications tab in Task Manager when the window is open.

Was there anything among your startups that you did not recognize? When the window is open, the program it belongs to will have a process in Task Manager. Try terminating one you think may be it and see if the window closes. If it does, remove that one from startup.

Since this is prior to loading Windows, I'm not sure that the startup programs would have anything to do with this issue.......

I must have blinders on. Missed that twice. Thanks, Candy.

So, we are either in the system BIOS or that of some add-on card. Do you have any cards added in a PCI slot, such as one for an external drive, USB expansion, or something like that?

Have an extra video card in one PCI slot and DIO 24. On boot up, pressed F8 to get to boot logs which are very long. Is there anything else to try?

I suspect the DIO. Can you remove those PCI cards and see if the message disappears? It may be an error from the DIO.

DIO, if I have it right, is "Digital Input/Output". It's a type of card for control of external equipment or measuring devices. I suppose they can be configured to run most anything.
