I have bought a new laptop of hp 4 months back. It was working fine till a week ago. But from last week I could not access the internet through IE7. Yahoo messenger and google talk are working fine. when I try to ping google.com, it is pinging so internet connections are available. I tried to install firefox but the same problem exists. I have os of windows vista. please help me in this regard as soon as possible.

Sounds like add/mal/spyware. I hate typing that, but the lines between them are so blurred. There are several good programs out there, i use AdAware by Lavasoft, its free to download and use, only drawback is it doesn't offer real-time protection without a fee. Its not the only program though, and as always use discresion with what you download. You will probably have to download it at a friends or something though. Annoying, yes, but necessary in this case.

Also, sometimes firewalls don't like updates to internet browsers, because they haven't been classed as 'safe' so also try removing your browser from the 'allowed programs' list, and then add it again. To find internet explorers .exe file search for iexplore in windows search.

I think there's many people dealing with the exact same problem

http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/...pages-don.html

I really don't think it is a malware problem, have tried several malware scan rpograms and nothing happened.

Have reseted winsocks, have reseted IE settings, and I still don't have access...

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Thanks Terry... but unfortunately I did what you suggested and my connection isn't working yet. It's really strange. I can use msn, and I know the connection is working since right now I'm writing this with my connection from Ubuntu.
But everything else fails. Bittorrent only works uploading, no browser works (IE nor Firefox), windows update hangs up, etc...

What is going oooon!! :S:S:S

Make sure that you do not have a 3rd party firewall (internet security) that is not allowing your browsers to have internet access. It's also possible that an uninstall of one was not complete and clean.

Well, I have nod32 and windows firewall.. I think nod32 doesn't have internet security functions, so I don't think it's its fault. I have disabled it, though, and the problem persists.
I used to have norton security (it came with the computer), but i uninstalled it MONTHS before the problem appeared...
