Solved: Strage things happened to Firefox
Upon opening Firefox this morning, there is a bar at the bottom that I'm not sure how to get rid of
(I've attached this pic to help explain what I mean.)

I also can't open a bookmark in a new window
Everything was fine yesterday.
The only thing I've done is download updates for AVG Free, which required a restart.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

ETA: Also when I click on links in other posts nothing happens.
ETA for the 2nd time to say that I have also lost my RoboForm tool bar, and my ZoneAlarm spyware tool bar

Thank you so much bozz

The problem was with the AVG Safe search add on.
I disabled it after trying the other options from the link you gave

Thanks again
raffikki

ETA: The only thing that hasn't gone back to normal is my search engines, I have lost google
