You said you already know about Gmail, but I use it, it's very easy to use.
I have two e-mail addresses, one personal and one that I use for school and job applications. It actually sounds very professional to me. Just use your name with a period in-between first and last name (if it's available), or some easy-to-remember numbers afterwards.
Gmail is great.

Thanks for all the advice folks. I might be going down the domain root, and getting hotmail or gmail to provide the email service while using my domain as the email address
