Best free Webmail?
Hi Folks,

I currently use Lycos & GMX for my mail. Over the last year the Lycos service has been getting bad. So I started moving over to GMX. Problems there is that as I am on the road a lot GMX takes up too much bandwith and is still in BETA.

I know what hotmail, yahoo, google offer.

Does anyone know of another good online email service that sounds a little professional?

I have tried Inbox, but as they require a text message to sign up and I am overseas most of the time it's not such good to me.

Also looked at Bluebottle, but hate the name.

Any suggestions on providers??

Dave

Not sure these qualify on being professional:
AOL webmail - see the sticky in this forum.
Windows Live Mail

Thanks

AOL is difficult to register if you are overseas.

Live mail sucks up too much bandwidth.

Keep em coming, there has to be something else out there?

There's no profit to be made in offering free e-mail. That's why it's offered by companies with other profit-generating businesses. You're seeking the Holy Grail of e-mail here, and it's just not likely to happen. The most professional e-mail address is one that you either pay for or host as part of your company's domain. Neither of those options is free.

Even if someone comes along and suggest a totally free e-mail provider with an address you like, advertising will have to be part of the package, and there's a definite risk of the company simply shutting down if they don't make enough money.

Rather than trying to do e-mail on the absolute cheap, look for a solution that meets the needs of your business and fits within your budgets. As with everything, you'll have to compromise on something.

A free encrypted HIPAA compliant email webmail service is called scamble by hisecure.net (https://hisecure.net). I think it is mostly used by doctors and dentists.

If you don't mind being a guinea pig testing NetMail, occasional outages and a 10 MB storage storage limit, there is MyRealBox.com.

EDIT: Never mind. Just noticed they are not signing up new accounts at the moment.

@ cwwozniak

Even if they were taking new accounts, horrible
would be too mild a word for myrealbox.

ho hum, and I was getting excited there at the prospect of a new email to look at.

Maybe the best thing is to buy a domain.... but then I need a host..... and then spend a lot of money every year..... (no income, no money, hmmmm no domain)

What are you looking for in an e-mail provider that you're not finding? Paying for a domain and hosting doesn't seem to make sense if you're not running a business and also can't afford the cost. There are great free e-mail providers available. If you're looking for a job and using e-mail as a point of contact, you absolutely need something reliable. Using an off-the-wall provider is not a good idea.

I got a MyRealBox account years ago before Gmail was around and when Hotmail was a spammers haven. We were changing ISPs every couple of years and used MyRealBox as my backup address during transitions. It serves my needs.

I had mine for years too - when it was working, it was good.
However, seems like it was down more than up and when
they sold it or whatever that transition was, it got even
worse. So I gave it up.

I am looking for something reliable, that can me used for job applications, looks a little professional as as @ address and most importantly that does not take up bandwidth. Gmail, yahoo, hotmail all fit into those categories. Inbox did, but is not so good overseas as their system requires text messaging etc to set up. I guess the big three are still the only ones lol

Employers will have no problem with Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail accounts as your primary e-mail address. What you do have control over is what you select for your username. That's where you need to focus on professionalism. CareerBuilder had an article about this very thing not too long ago. Stick to using your name with a series of numbers. Don't get cute.

I can only think of one professional sounding service which is actually really good. I have used in the past and it is reliable. It's called Tech Email. To be honest I actually think @gmail.com or @googlemail.com sounds quite professional. Google have a great email service made better by the Google Toolbar.
