Solved: problem with opening emails O.E.
Hi' All,
I am asking this question for a friend. She has I.E.7 & O.E. 6. SP2 running XP Home.
My friend can't open emails in O.E. I tried to help as I thought she may have a currupt inbox so I deleted that by finding the store folder and looking for the inbox where it said. I deleted it and rebooted but didn't fix the problem.The inbox came back.
Before that I tried the maintenance tab under tools, and was going to compact her folders but they were not listed, only her newsgroups.
I've been searching google and came accross something about .dll files so I followed those instructions to see if she had them.
Run: regsvr32 urlmon.dll that was okay
regsvr32 mshtml.dll module not found
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll tha was okay
regsvr32 browseui.dll module not found
regsvr32 msjava.dll that was okay

Could you please tell me if I should install those 2 .dll's into the registry, would that fix her problem, if so do I go to edit and new in the registry and type those 2 entries into registry, or should I try something else, floundering here as at a lost to help her.

Hi josey

To Compact all folders, in Outlook Express, use:
File > Folder > Compact All Folders

Shut down all programs before starting the Compacting process in Outlook Express and it is best to not run anything else, on the computer, during the process.

When the compacting process is complete, close Outlook Express and restart the computer.
Start Outlook Express and attempt to open a message.

At this time, let's leave those .dll files alone.


Let us know if that makes a difference or not.

Thank you, I did try to compact using tools, options, maintenance, clean up now, O.E., but the O.E., folders are not under the little O.E. Envelope. I will try doing it your way but I have to go to friends house or try to ring her tonight and talk her through doing that.

I just talked my friend through your instructions by phone but it didn't work. I though if she created a new identity that might work, it did for about 1 minute, she receive an email from Microsoft welcoming to O.E. 6 and also one for Outlook, even though nothing was done in the settings for Outlook. I then send and email to her and she was able to open it, she sent one to me and that was fine. the next thing it all froze on her again. Messages saying thins program is not responding and needs to close, so she ended that. Rebooted, and then at the top bar it said Main identity not responding.
I'm at a loss now.
Can you help further please.

I'm just sending this cause in the at the forum it doesn't seem to show I've answered, maybe because I did the quick reply so I'm doing it the other way, just to make sure that this is seen so as to get further help.

That doesn't sound good.

Main Identity not responding, that doesn't sound right.
It sounds like she was back in the original Identity.

When she created the new Identity in Outlook Express, did she
select:
Create a new Internet mail account
or
Use an existing Internet mail account ?

Then there was the option to:
Import from
or
Do not import at this time

__________________________________________________________________________


Have her try creating a completely new Identity, again.

In Outlook Express:
File > Identities > Add New Identity
Name the Identity
OK
Yes to switch to the new Identity

Select:
Create a new Internet mail account
she will need to manually key in her e-mail account information.
Finish


Select:
Do not import at this time
Next
__________________________________________________________________________

Now she can send a Test message, addressed to herself or to you, to test her account settings and the ability to open messages in Outlook Express.

If all appears well, she can Import the messages from the Main Identity:
File > Import > Messages
Select: Microsoft Outlook Express 6
Next
Select the Main Identity
OK

Next > Next
The Import should begin immediately.
When the Import is complete, click: Finish
__________________________________________________________________________

Set the new Identity as the Default Identity:
File > Identities > Manage Identities
Place a check mark in: Use this Identity when starting a program
Click the drop down arrow and select the new Identity.

Click the drop down arrow for:
Use this identity when a program cannot ask you for an identity
Select the new identity.
Click: Close

Now when Outlook Express is opened, it will open to the new identity.
Have her use the new identity for a few days to see if all goes well.


Let us know what happens.

Yes, she created a new identity, but as I wasn't there it's hard to tell even though I did talk her through it all. I think the best thing is for me to go there if I can tomorrow and do it with her. I thought later that she has probably ended up with a couple of email acounts in O.E., and wasn't sure if one should be deleted, but I'll follow your instructions and come back. I've just had a call from my friend and now she has a blue screen and can't get past it, so I've advised her to turn off and try to reboot, if she gets Windows back I've asked her to do a system restore, so O.E., fixes will depend on her getting windows back. I'll come back tomorrow, late night here.

Sorry to bother you again, but it just occurred to me that her original email address wasn't changed when I asked her to create a new identity, would that matter as she would like to keep her email address. She just changed the way recipients would see her name in an email. I wasn't sure about that.

No, her e-mail account (address) does not need to be changed.
But, it does need to be manually keyed in.

We are starting everything from scratch.


Though, she will get to keep her old messages.
The new Identity will be a new container for her old messages, once it is established that a new Identity will work properly.

Many thanks for confirming that, yes she did manually key it in, I'm sure of that. I feel better now as thought I may have mislead her with that part.

I went to my friend's home today and I followed your instructions regarding the new identity and it worked...woohoo!!. I sent an email using the new identity and everything opened nicely and all the folders are working.

The system restore seems to have worked with regard to the blue screen too, so all is well. However, if it happens again, the blue screen I mean then I will come back and start another thread.
