Windows Mail & Anti Virus Protection
I purchased an new pc last week and started using Windows Mail. I was told to disable the emial scanner or it would casue a problem with WM. Later I found AVG Free scanning and it had been doing so for 6 hours. Decided to give Avira a try. The next day my WM got totally screwed up. Avira free doesn't have an email scanner so I believe it was AVG that caused the problem.

My question is what AV could I use with some assurance that this want happen again?

I have heard Windows Live Mail is much more stable but I don't like some of the setups on it.

Is anybody here running Vista Home Premium with either Avast or Avira on it and using Windows Mail with no problems?

Information quoted from Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP - hope this helps.

Quote:
Email scanning is redundant at best, and harmful to email database
integrity at worst. Read http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Even Symantec (Norton Antivirus), the originator of email scanning,
admits that it is unnecessary.

Did your PC when new come with a time-limited version of Norton or
McAfee antivirus? Those can leave troublesome remnants.

Most versions of the Norton antivirus program aren't compatible with Windows
Mail, so uninstall the one on the Vista machine. The problems they
cause are often slow to show up though.

The uninstall program for Norton often leaves too much behind,
though, so you often need to download and run this cleanup program
after the uninstall:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus program
that doesn't cause such problems. Most versions of the McAfee antivirus
program and a recent version of the Trend antivirus program are bad choices;
they also cause problems in Windows Mail. I recommend either avast! or
AVG, either one with a custom install where you tell it to leave out the
part that scans email:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
and
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

If you don't like AVG or Avast, purchase NOD32 or Kaspersky; both are top-
rated.

Mozilla Thunderbird is a good alternative to Windows Mail.

Thank for the reply.

I had uninstalled Norton 360 trial (even though I don't think it was active on my new pc) the day I got it.

I had read something similiar about email scanning being reduntant.

I had used AVG for years with no problems.

After much study between Avira and Avast I went with Avira as it had no email scanner on the free version so hopefully Norton didn't start a problem with my Windows Mail like I had previously.

Thanks again.
