Faster uploads to Rapidshare and such?
I hope this is the right place to post this...

I have a Rapidshare account and upload files on a regular basis.
But, these uploads go at a very slow speed.
I know that my max upload speed is around 600KB/s.
This speed is easily reached when I upload something through FTP.
But when I upload to RS, MU, or any other webhosting place then my max won't go beyond 80KB/s.

For RS I use either Rapiduploader or Rapidshare Manager.
With both I have had the same result.

I am wondering if there is anything I could do that would improve my speeds.

I am running Windows XP, I have a wireless connection.
This computer is going through a router, so perhaps something along the lines of port forwarding could fix the issue.
If anyone has a solution, please let me know.

Thank you, DutchShrek

If you want to see if the problem is your router, bypass it and see if it gets any faster. I think the more likely issue is that the sites you are using are throttling upload bandwidth to give them more available for downloads.

Rapidshare is just probably putting a cap on your upload bandwidth. Many sites do this on both uploads and downloads. Keep in mind that it is both the remote server and your local bandwidth that limit your speed. If you have a very fast internet connection but are connecting to a slow server, your downloads and uploads will still be slow.

it might be a cap on the upload speed not sure.
But a while ago I was able to upload at the full 600KB/s for a while.
Not sure what changed since then.
This made me wonder if it had something to do with settings.

I have a premium account so I get good DL speeds from them.
Thing is, if I have access to an FTP server then I have the ability for remote uploads.
At that point Rapidshare will have the files in under 5 minutes.

I've tried setting up a local ftp client but that sucked up everyhting this connection has to offer.
Seems it took away everything from other PC's connected to the router as well.

It can also depend on the load on the server. If it's very busy, you will get much less bandwidth than if there are few visitors and lots of bandwidth is open for every user.

Try testing your internet connection here. Pick the closest location to you and then tell us what it says for your upload speed.

well one would think it has to do with server load.
But you see, I upload on a daily basis. And it doesn't matter what time of the day I'm uploading.

I ran that test just for the heck of it.
Quote:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 9314 kbps (1164.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 4957 kbps (619.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
That download speed does not appear to be correct, on average I download at a rate of about 1.5MB/s
But that doesn't matter much I think

a second test gave me about the same
Quote:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 9706 kbps (1213.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 4854 kbps (606.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Am I right to assume that uploading to sites like Rapidshare and Megaupload is related to the TCP settings in the router?

Would it be possible to open a port for this function?

I don't know, I'm just trying to come up with whatever I can.

Anything you do through a web browser (HTTP protocol) usually goes through TCP port 80, and Rapidshare is no exception. Obviously port 80 is already open. I'm guessing that changing TCP settings wouldn't do much for you, but you could poke around and see what you can find.

Keep in mind that FTP is a different protocol than HTTP, and as a result you could get different speeds.

I really don't think there's much you can do - I'm guessing Rapidshare is either slow or just capping your upload speed.

Anybody have other opinions/ideas?

Yup, pretty sure it's just Rapidshare.

Here's my speedtest:
Download Speed: 21289 kbps (2661.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 5104 kbps (638 KB/sec transfer rate)

I just uploaded a sample file to Rapidshare, and I was getting 50KB/sec upload speed. I know nothing is up with my connection, as I get good upload speeds to other websites and through FTP, just like you.

alright, thanks a lot Erik
I honestly thought I was gonna lose my mind over this.
I'll just have to do with what I have.

I'm still playing around a little with serv-U to see if I can't get rapidshare to grab it from me through remote uploads with FTP.
So far no luck, clogs up everything I have sadly.

Too bad FTP server's are pretty expensive, otherwise I'd just get one of those.

Anyway, thanks again m8

Most web hosting accounts come with an anonymous FTP account that you can use to host files. If you're willing to pay $7 or $8 a month, that could be an option.

Here's a site that claims to be free up to 1GB. You might want to check them out.
http://www.drivehq.com/Ftp/

Again, I could be wrong on the capping thing, but I feel pretty confident about it. If anyone wants to post their opinion, feel free. The more opinions the better. (JToast, any other comments? )

The problem with most webhosting accounts is that FTP sharing in that manner is not permitted.
So an actual FTP host would be required to do as I want it.

DriveHQ is actually not to bad of a site.
Sadly, from what I can tell, they have limitations. Even for premium users.
This is what is stated on their site.
Quote:
DriveHQ has virtually unlimited network bandwidth, so theoretically the upload/download speed can be very fast. We limit download speed to less than 220KB/sec for free service users. For premium users, the maximum download speed is 400 to 600KB/sec. Please note if you have multiple users downloading your files at the same time, they will share the download bandwidth. We don't limit upload speed.
None the less, I created an account and I'm gonna play around with it to see if I can at least improve my situation a little bit.
Every little bit helps right?

I could easily get a full speed server to use, but as I said, that's too expensive.
Sites like drivehq is exactly what I am looking for.
I'll need to invest a little money in it to get the most out of it.
But like many other people I don't intend to go for the first one I see, because I want as much as I can get for the least amount of money.
I mean a balance of quality and cost.

Still, thanks for the suggestion, it's greatly appreciated
