Smile Solved: Firefox and IE7 stop working after computer runs for an hour or more
I am using a Toshiba Satellite U305 with Vista Home Premium and am connected by cable to a dsl modem for internet access. When the computer first starts I can open Firefox 3 and it works great for an hour or so and then stops loading. The loading icon and message appears but the page never loads. If I shut it down it still shows the process running in Task Manager, and if I click stop process it will not stop it. I can then open IE7 and it works fine for about 2 hours and then stops loading. I have tried shutting down Zone Alarm, Avast, and Spybot to no avail. The only thing that works is "restarting". I have run the ATF Cleaner and MBAM, which reports the machine is clean. The system worked fine for months until about two weeks ago. Please help.

sorry, I meant to ask. My problem also seemed to start a couple of weeks ago after I installed AnVir Task Manager. Did you also install it??

No, I don't have that installed. I was experiencing "hanging" or freezing with IE7 and a recommended fix was to upgrade to IE8.2, which I did. The problem continued so I downloaded Firefox and have experienced the same problem, only more severe. I have tried all of their recommended fixes without any improvement. I also spent a lot of time on the Zone Alarm forums and troubleshooting site. I restored my unit back to a date when IE7 was working and can stay online longer with that than any other browser. Looking for a solution.

Try this ...

Uninstall ZoneAlarm. Restart. Install ZoneAlarm and immediately uninstall it. Restart.

Try this: operate the machine normally and when either browser can no longer access the web, open a command prompt and issue these commands:

ipconfig /all
ping www.yahoo.com

Post the output here, if you can.

Peace...

TerryNet,
Followed your instructions for Zone Alarm. Firefox was only open for 35 minutes when it stopped loading.

tomdkat,
when I enter the command the black screen with the c prompt just flashes on the desktop and then disappears. It looks as if it is filled with text, but it disappears quickly. What do I need to do?

Click "Start", then "Run" and type: cmd

and press enter. When the command prompt opens, then you can type those two commands and the window won't disappear. If you click the icon in the upper left hand corner of the command prompt window, you will get a drop down menu. Click "Edit" and then "Mark" and then highlight the contents of the window and press enter. That will copy it to the clipboard. You can then save it in a text file and post it here when you can.

Peace...

The following has helped one or two others with your symptoms.

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

If TerryNet's instructions don't help, boot Windows into Safe Mode with Networking and see if the problem persists.

Peace...

After rebooting it followed the usual pattern, after an hour Firefox stopped loading. Usually I can open IE7 and run that for a while, but when I opened it it did not even load a page.

I am going to try the Safe Mode now and see what happens.

Make SURE you use "Safe Mode With Networking" otherwise you won't be able to run your test.

Peace...
