Hi All,

I really hope you can help! I am running XP Pro sp3 on a Dell D630 dual core with 2gb of memory.

All was fine until Tue morning when I had an MS pop up saying that updates need to be installed. So I clicked 'Custom' to see what the install was. The only update was IE8 so I decided to pass as I use Firefox mostly and told it to not install and not remind me again.

For some reason my laptop didn't like that and I had to re-boot. Now I'm having major issues with browsing. Basically none of my browsers work. They load, but have great trouble connecting to web sites - any sites. Sometime I can get a site up (like my hotmail account), but then clicking a link and it either times out or I get page not found, or oops link broken etc (depending on the browser).

I did a system restore back to last week hoping that whatever got corrupted or had an issue would be fixed - no luck.

I've virus scanned and I'm clean.

I've checked all network setting - all ok. I've checked the DSL line speed - it's OK.

I've checked the DSL/Wireless/network on some of the other PC's on the network and it's all fine.

I've uninstalled and re-installed Chrome and Firefox - no good.

Any other app that needs internet access such as Google Adwords Editor amd Outlook works fine, it's just the browsers that are not working. Which is a major issue for me as I'm an internet marketer and webmaster - this is how I make my living!

So I'm stuck. I have no idea what to do try next or how to fix this issue. If I had a proxy server I'd say that was the issue but I don't. I wondered if it was a DSN resolution issue but the other machines on the network are fine.

It has to be something that all browsers do on a pc or a setting they need that has somehow become corrupt. Any ideas??

Refresh your DNS (Sometimes negative DNS may give errors on specific sites)
By following these steps:
Start >> Run >> cmd

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /renew


Click Start, then Run and type CMD in the dialogue box that appears, and then click OK. Type netsh winsock reset into the DOS window that appears.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. Click Start, then Run and type CMD, then type netsh int ip reset reset.log


Check your HOSTS file.

It's located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc.

Examine the content of your HOSTS file. We do not need to worry about any line that begins with an # because it is ignored by Windows. Also, the line "127.0.0.1 localhost" or "::1 localhost" can be safely ignored, because it is a standard entry.

A HOSTS file can be used to control Web page to IP address associations.

Anything else that appears in your HOSTS file without an # at the beginning, apart from the "127.0.0.1 localhost" or "::1 localhost" lines, should be viewed with suspicion when we are trying to diagnose the cause of "Page cannot be displayed" errors. The quickest way to test for HOSTS file involvement is to right click the HOSTS file, then select Rename. Add the letter X to the beginning or end of the file name and then ok your changes. By changing the name of the HOSTS file, we stop your web browser from using it, and therefore resolve any issues caused by the file.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

OK I tried the ipconfig dns reset no luck. Dittio the netsh and even renaming HOSTS.

Oh Just to let you know I also ran the MS Network diagnostic tool in ie. It came back with no problems for Http and Https but failed the ftp test. At this point I'm not too worried about ftp, but I did try to FTP out to some of my sites - no luck. Don't know if this helps or not

I can't see anything suspicious in your log but it doesn't mean you're not infected.

Can you ping any websites?

Do you have the same security software and the same amount of toolbars on all PCs in your network?

Have you tried running without your firewall?

All the pc's on the network have slightly different configurations. Most run mcaffee and a couple avast. They're all behaving ok. As for toolbars yeah, they all seem to have way too many!

I did notice that Mcaffee is having some issues - seems to keep erroring on virus protection. Then its does a download and fixes itself. When it did this yesterday I did a full scan but no viruses were detected.

I'll try and switch off the firewall and see what happens....

Hi Phantom (and everyone else),

Here's an update. The issue has something to do with the wireless connection. I just plugged my laptop into the dock and it's working fine. Undocked the browsing is terrible, but as previously stated non browser traffic is ok.

So my question now is where should I look for the problem. Would removing the wireless network connections work? Will XP rebuild them and allow me to reconfigure, or should I do some sort of repair?

The only way to truly test if McAfee is the issue is to uninstall it and run the Removal Tool.

Hi All,

I've marked this as solved. I've managed to narow down the issue to the router - specifically wirless connections. I've updated the firmware and re-booted the wireless and my http conncetions are a lot better.

Time to get a new router I think!
