Where are free LEGAL MP3s available?
I just ordered my first MP3 player (cutting edge, ain't I?) and I am trying to find places to download things like MP3 videos, music, books, etc., but there are so many questionable sites that I'm hesitant to download anything.

I know Amazon has some free music, but can anyone suggest any other sites with free LEGAL downloads?

I'm not into the new music, but mostly older stuff -- big band, jazz, standards, etc -- as well as audio books etc.

I've never even SEEN an MP3 video before, so I really want to try one of those as well.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some music selling websites have free-download offers as a bonus for joining.

Also, you might want to try Creative Commons, too, music there is completely free to download.

And lastly, you might want to look at the websites or social-networking sites of your favorite bands. They may have free downloads of some of their songs in order to encourage purchases.

Thanks for the suggestions, Sandy. I'll try that Creative Commons place for sure. As for my favorite bands, they include Glen Miller, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman etc -- all who were dead long before your time! But I may google their names and see if anyone has a site with their music on them.

RootbeaR -- WOW ... that site is incredible -- I can't imagine watching an entire movie on my tiny MP3 player, but some of those oldies would be a kick to watch on my computer. I never knew that site existed. This is opening up whole new worlds for me!!

Ooops ... I almost missed the audio book site. What a fantastic project. Not only will I find good books to download (I love the classics) but a friend of mine used to read for a 'reading for the blind" radio station and I know she'll be interested in volunteering to read books for the project. Thanks so much ....

Check out your public library. There are 2 different ways to get free (legal) books and music as MP3 and many libraries offer access to both. You download a small software application directly from the library's site and then download the books or music to that. They've even got the latest books but all of the music is classical. They've also got movies.
