 | Junior Member with 10 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2009 Experience: Intermediate | | Says I'm connected so why can't I load any pages? I just brought home my pc from work where it has been for months doing offline work. Before I took it from home the Internet worked fine (IE). I can use my laptop just fine from home on this connection, but when I went to rehook the pc back up and get on the internet, nothing. I had to run the ipconfig /all to get the info again and then it connected just fine. Pinged and everything was 4 out of 4. Even tried defaulting winsock, and nothing. Does anybody have ANY suggestions of what might be wrong here? I don't have any new programs on my pc, dont' use any fancy security, don't have Norton or anything. Just can't figure this out....help!!!! | | Distinguished Member with 3,002 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2001 Location: Avalon,Catalina Island,Ca. Experience: Intermediate | | Welcome to TSG.
So,sorry,I am a bit confused.
You can or cannot get onto the net with the pc ?
"I had to run the ipconfig /all to get the info again and then it connected just fine. "
If you do not have a connection.Let's see this info.
From a Johnwill post on the Networking Forum
Try these simple tests.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:
IPCONFIG /ALL
PING <computer_IP_address> For addresses,follow instructions below….
PING <default_gateway_address>
PING <dns_servers>
PING 206.190.60.37
PING www.yahoo.com
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.
<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. IPV4 for Vista
<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.
<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.
If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Everything on the check list you provided had been started. I tried to ping <dns_servers> but it came back saying there was a syntax not needed. Tried to ping 206.190.60.37 and it came back with sent:4 Rec: 0 Loss 4 (100% loss), and could not ping yahoo. Said it coul dnot find it....
Very confused then why my pc says it's connected then... | | Junior Member with 10 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2009 Experience: Intermediate | | When I tried to let it Obtain the IP and DNS automatically the connection came up saying the connection was too weak or almost not there. If I type in the IP and DNS, the connection says it's good...but still can't load pages. Just says Could not load this page....and all that. | | Distinguished Member with 3,002 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2001 Location: Avalon,Catalina Island,Ca. Experience: Intermediate | | Hi:It would be a lot easier for me to diagnose,if you could copy/paste all the results from your ipconfig and pings
Your dns server ping should read.
ping 68.88.77.134.
Are you using a standalone router.?
Please provide me the make and models of your modem (and router)
And just to confirm again,in services, the dns and dhcp clients are running ? I ask that because your ipconfig indicates that dhcp is not running.
I will be out celebrating the 4th here on our little island paradise so will not be back on the net till tomorrow.
There are others here who can chime in also.If not, will catch you tomorrow.

Compaq presario v6000tx.Dual processor.1.73 ghz. XP Home | | Junior Member with 10 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2009 Experience: Intermediate | | yep, says they are stared. I do apologize, but have no way of transferring the copied results onto here. One (this one) is online, but the other one doesn't seem to be and I have no discs here. My router is a Comast Arris router model: TM502G. | | Distinguished Member with 3,002 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2001 Location: Avalon,Catalina Island,Ca. Experience: Intermediate | | OK;I am confused(not an unusual state for me)but in searching tm502G,
I find this.
According to Arris' website, the TM502G is a modem only, not a router. If you have this connected to a wireless router, we'd need to know the brand and model of the router. Most routers already support several types of wireless security protocols, but accessing and setting them up differs.
So,if a modem,have you followed the setup instructions in user's guide starting at page 52 + ?
Have you done a power on reset of the modem ?Power off for at least 30 seconds.
Also, just to cover an outside base,do a tcpip stack repair, like so.
Stack repair for XP and Vista.
Courtesy of Johnwill of the Networking forum.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type the following netsh commands..
Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reboot the machine.
How about the ping to 68.88.77.134? results ?

#10 | Oops. Sorry. It's not connected to a wireless. I'm using the same modem for my laptop that works just fine. I did the winsock thing yesterday and just now did it again, and rebooted but it goes to saying Limited or no conecctivity. So I manually put in the IP and DNS again. It says connted at 100 again but still no pages. Now, when I try to ping the DNS I'm typing in "ping <dns_servers>"...is that right? I want to say how much I appreciate your patience with me. I though tI knew an adequate amount about computed until now... | | Distinguished Member with 3,002 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2001 Location: Avalon,Catalina Island,Ca. Experience: Intermediate |

#15 | Almost tapped out here.
Please confirm that you have followed the modem user's manual from the pages I detailed above.
Then let's see another ipconfig /all
Confirm that you have done a power on reset of the modem.Off for at least 30 seconds.
And my last suggestion might be to call your ISP(If they provided the modem),and see if they can tell you how your modem should be configured or if there is any more current firmware available for your modem..
