Hey all, i was having some problems with IE8 being slow and unresponsive. i decided to uninstall it and go back to IE7 because it was a lot quicker and during the uninstall of ie8 i got a copy error message saying that setup cannot copy the file hmmapi.dll.mui ensure that the location specified below is correct or change it and insert Windows NTService Pack uninstall directory in the drive you specify. then below it shows, copy files from: and in the box below it shows
C:\WINDOWS\ie8 or i can browse i uninstalled ie8 once before and did not have this problem so i have no idea what to do now to get ie8 out. all help will be appreciated. i am running windows xp

hi fgdn17, i tried the add/remove and thats when i get the copy error. i also tried the alternate method and i still get the same copy error. i tried to reinstall ie8 and that didnt work either. i really want to get ie8 out of this computer

I ran the revo uninstaller and ie8 is no longer in the add/remove program but i think it is still in the computer because ie7 is not listed in the add/remove. if you uninstall ie8 it is supposed to roll back to ie7. now i need help to remove the rest of ie8 from my computer. would it be worth trying to reinstall ie8 and see if that fixes anything?

i thought i had the problem solved but i was wrong. IE8is not showing up in the add/remove but it is still in the computer. i tried the alternate method of uninstalling again but i still get the copy error i described in post #1. i could sure use some help to get it out of my system please.

I installed service pack 3 before IE8 so would IE8 be removed if i uninstall sevice pack 3?

Can someone tell me if i should maybe do a hjt log in case my computer may be infected. if so, do i do it here?

I just noticed in my add/remove that service pack 3 is there but i am not able to uninstall it. i know the remove button used to be there so i assume it has something to do with IE8 being messed up. i really need to get this figured out. if i still had the option to restore my dell to factory settings i would do that in a heartbeat, but i lost that option when i had to have the xp reinstalled by a tech awhile back. i have no idea how to do a reinstall of xp on my own. I can really use some help big time.

Do you have the install CD's that came with the PC? Which model of Dell?

Hi stantley, yes i have the windows xp cd that came with the computer when i bought it three years ago. thank you for replying to my post. its a dell dimension E520

Which model of Dell? Do you also have the drivers CD?

If you reinstall Windows you'll wipe out everything on your hard drive. Do you have a way to back up files that you'll want to save, like an external hard drive or burning CD's or DVD's.

The system info shows Model Dm061 and yes i also recieved the drivers cd when i purchased the computer. the only things i would need to save are pics and favorites and music which i can put on a usb key.

OK, then backup everything you want to save on the thumb drive.

Read through this step-by-step guide on how to reinstall XP on a Dell, you also might want to print it out to have as a guide when you reinstall.

You'll have to reinstall all other programs so make sure you save any install programs and registration keys you might need.

I am backing up everything i need now and i have my xp key#. i will get back to you after i have finished saving my programs. i have never done a reinstall before and i dont know alot about computers so please bear with me. i also dont have a spare computer to communicate either
