Solved: Site access (possible DNS) problems
Hi,
I'm having real problems accessing some web sites, particularly those that are anti-virus software related i.e Symantec, AVG etc. I get the message "Internet explorer cannot display the web page". I have Virgin PCGuard installed which is driving me insane due to RPS.exe causing the CPU to be up to 70% used, so I want to change to AVG.

Any help gratefully recieved. Thanks.

Welcome to TSG.
So what happens if you just ping the web site?

Like ping www.avg.com or any other web site that you are having trouble with.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:
ping www.avg.com etc

Hint: A failure to ping is almost always a firewall issue.

Hi,

Tried that and got the message "Ping request could not find host www.avg.com. Please check the name and try again". I don't think I have done anything to change my Firewall.

Regards,

Yep.Sounds like a dns issue.

Let's see the results of these two pings and the results of the ipconfig /all from the failing pc.From a Johnwill post on the Networking Forum

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING 206.190.60.37

PING www.yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. IPV4 for Vista

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Ok:
Need more info.
Make and model of modem
If a standalone router is involved, make and model
What happens when you ping the DNS server ?.

Here are some things you should look at :
Let's try a stack repair,like so "

Stack repair for XP and Vista.
Courtesy of Johnwill of the Networking forum.

XP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following netsh commands..

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

And let's make sure that the necessary services are running

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
• COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
• Computer Browser
• DHCP Client
• DNS Client
• Network Connections
• Network Location Awareness
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
• Server
• TCP/IP Netbios helper
• Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
• WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
• Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running.
