Solved: Outlook Express 6 Compacting
Hi i need some help, oe6 is trying to compact every few minutes and its driving me mad, i have read the thread from costaki on 16th may 09 but not being a technical user i am not quite sure how to delete these SKSDAEMON and SKSMAILD files correctly, i know throoper and phantom010 did solve this problem so if your out there please help.

I have tried the procedures as all answers you posted but failed, can i have a simple idiots guide please, i have checked the compact check count and the figure is 100 in the box with hexidecimal checked.

If anyone knows how to solve this easily this would be much apprceciated before i destroy it.

Thanks.

Hi Prestige,

You need to check that it is the same problem and has the same cause.
Start>Run>Regedit>OK.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0, right click the value Compact Check Count and click Modify.
Change the value to 0, OK and exit Registry Editor.

If you haven't already gotten Regmon, go to THIS POST and follow the instructions for download and use. That should tell what is running up the "Check count".

Once you know exactly what the cause is, then it can be dealt with. It could be as simple as updating a driver for the offending program. Probably won't be that simple, but you can always dream.

Let me know what you find.

Hi Prestige,

If you opened Regmon and set the filter and OK'ed it, it should fill up when you open OE or if any thing else is accessing OE.
When you first started it before setting the filter, did it start loading entries?
What's your OS? It will work on XP and earlier.

Edit: Forgot to ask. SP3? IE8?

Hi Prestige,

Has anything other than msimn.exe accessed the OE Identity key today?

Hi throoper,

I have had regmon running all the time and periodically i maximise it, go to edit>find and type in Compact check count but a box comes up with NO ITEMS TO SEARCH in it so i dont know what i have done wrong, but i have only had to compact messages once in last 24 hrs and i spent most of the day on emails yesterday. Also just checked and the compact check count is still at 0. Perhaps you can let me know why i cant seem to access the correct format through regmon for the info you need.

Thanks

Hi throoper,

I have REGMON running now and have maximised it a few times, all thats running is regedit.exe:4492 on 3 lines and msimn.exe:3448 on 1594 lines, also no compact request yet and i have been emailing all morning and usually i would have had to compact at least 5 times now. I will await your next instruction before i do anything else.

regards

Hi Prestige,

Regmon appears to be working fine. It's showing that msimn.exe (that's the OE executable) is accessing the Identity key. Also when you check in the Registry using Regedit, that's showing up in Regmon.
As you aren't getting an entry for the Compact Check Count and when you look in the Registry it's still set to 0, it would seem that nothing is accessing it, not even OE.
At a guess, it seems the problem is with OE itself rather than an outside app messing with it. Most likely problem is a damaged Reg key.

Important!!! First thing to do is to back up your OE Message Store. GO HERE for how to find it.
Just COPY the contents ( ALL of the DBX files) to a new folder on the desktop. Don't move them, just make copies.
Also create the shortcut to the Message Store as you may need to get into it a few times.

Once you have the Backup, run the Compact manually.
All of this is done in the open OE window.
Close all OE folders by clicking the Outlook Express folder at the top of the folder tree.
The Main page should be displayed in the Message Pane on the right.
File>Work Offline
File>Folder>Compact All Folders
Don't do anything with the computer until the Compact process is finished.
File>Work Offline to remove the check.

Use OE normally and see if the Compact Check Count increases.
It should increase by 1 each time OE is closed.
Also keep an eye on Regmon to see if anything is accessing it now.

Hi throoper.
Great to hear from you, before i do anything here is an update, just checked REGMON and now around 6000 entries apart from regedit and msimn i also have iexplore.exe:4648 and they have been there for a few hours, also just checked compact check counter through REGEDIT and its remained at 0, also up to now no compact requests from outlook at all. Should i now proceed to back up as per your instructions??

Hi Prestige,

If the list is getting a little large, just clear it and it will start again from that point.
There's a "Clear" button on the toolbar or just press Ctrl+X on your keyboard.
I would suspect IE is accessing due to clicking links in mail or Mailto: on web pages.

If the counter is still at 0, and you've closed OE once or twice, then it's damaged or otherwise disabled. The good part of that is it won't be pestering you to Compact.
The bad is that you do need to Compact once in a while to keep things running in OE, thus the need to see if it will manually Compact.

The backup is very important to have because there is the chance (slight, I'm betting on the Reg key) that it could be the files that control Compacting that are damaged and when you run it, you could lose all your mail.

I'm hoping that running the manual Compact will simply reset the Reg key and things will go back to running normally. Or at least let you know that you can do the manual without problems.

While I'm thinking of it, after you do the manual Compact, if all your messages are still there and everything seems OK, go into the Message Store folder and compare the sizes of the DBX files to the sizes in the backup folder. If the Compact worked properly, they should be smaller (but only the ones for folders that you use a lot, moving and deleting messages).
If they are, and everything is intact in OE, you can make a backup of the newly Compacted DBX files to replace the current backup that is not Compacted.
Or if you have the HD space for it, hang onto the old backup for a while as an extra safety. You can never have too many backups.

Hmmm!
Past it into a Notepad so you can see if you got the whole address.
If you did, use Windows Explorer, Ctrl+E keys, to navigate to that location. Be sure Show Hidden Files and Folders is enabled.

To make absolutely sure you are in the correct Message Store, in OE create a new folder with a unique name, open it once to activate it and then check that there is a DBX with that name in the Message Store.
