Angry Solved: dns errors? cannot find server, xp + firefox
When connecting to nearly any site the following errors occur - at various times.
1. cannot find server
2. a partial page loads with chunks missing
3. using latest updates to Windows XP - automatic updates
4. using Firefox 3.5 (but it also happens with IE)
5. web connection is via cable modem and a netgear wireless router, but the computer itself is wired to router - not wireless
Thanks for help. Searched forums and didn't find anything quite like this.

Welcome to TSG:
So let's go back to basic setup.
The point of this exercise is to reset the modem and router, but on the way verify connections. As well as getting some diagnostic info for analysis.
Also,did this just start to happen?If so,hardware/software changes ?
Tips on setting up broadband connection, courtesy of Johnwill

You don't need any setup disk to configure a broadband router.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.
• Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
• Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
• Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
• Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
• Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
• Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

Thank you - but I'm confused.
Where do I get this information?
PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

Thanks

The data you requested dns errors
I've tried to make this as clean as possible. But I've found that the only part of the text in the command line window that copies is what is showing. So I've had to do things piecemeal and try to string them together to get the material you've asked for.
The problem began a couple of weeks ago - and I did several things - one of them was to connect the wireless router so that I could use the wireless function to connect to NetFlix using a ROKU connection box (don't really know what to call it) to watch movies on TV from Netflix.

The router is a netgear router.

I used the autosetup to configure it.

1. no password needed to login
2.Internet address - set to get dynamically from ISP
3. Domain Name server addresses get dynamically from ISP
4. Router MAC address - set to use default address

My thought is that it is the router's interface with the cable broadband network. Also I didn't find a 'reset' key on the router when I turned everything off, so I just unplugged it.

I notice that default gateway address and the dns servers address is the same. Should they be different?

The first couple of times pinging www.yahoo.com it couldn't find the server - a typical response. The fourth try - it found the server.

OK.So it looks like you have a working ethernet connection.
The yahoo.com error could be symptomatic of a DNS problem, but it did resolve itself.
Let's do a stack repair, just in case, then run another ipconfig /all and associated pings.
What the 192.168.1.1 addresses indicate are that the dhcp server/dns server functions are being handl;ed by your default gateway(router)

Stack repair for XP and Vista.
Courtesy of Johnwill of the Networking forum.
TP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following netsh commands..

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

I'm going to send this - I hope - and then reboot.

However, there is still some funkyness in responses to web sites.
I have to go right now. So I'll do some checking later to see if the second reboot helped.

Thanks for your help thus far maybe this will be a fix.

Found that the issue is the netgear router
I spent about an hour on the help line with Brighthouse Netwrok (RoadRunner broadband service) and after lots of messing around. The last thing we did was disconnect the router and go directly to the cable modem. That resolved all the issues immediately.

So it is the router.

If you have any ideas about that, let me know. Otherwise tomorrow I'll go back online with the Brighthouse service people and they will conference in the netgear people and we'll hopefully be able to get it resolved.

Solution by substituting Open DNS for auto detect.
Thanks for the tip. After reading more on the router and DNS and the router I discovered this link which allows you to permanently substitute these DNS numbers. It was one of the recommended options on the NetGear website.

Thanks for all your help.

Great.Glad you got it fixed.
Opendns seems to be a pretty viable substitute for the assigned DNS server not playing nice.
