Hi all,
I landed at this forum searching for a solution to a problem I am experiencing with my brand new Sony Vaio FW45, Windows Vista x64 Home Premium installed from the manufacturer. This laptop is connected through an (older) SMC Barricade WBR2804 WLAN router. I found a (closed) thread by member Nemo2000 in this forum named
'IE7 intermittent failure to access URLs etc '. link here:
http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/...cess-urls.html
This describes my problem exactly. Internet is connected properly (as ping of several remote servers by name succeeds continually), but Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox are (seemingly random) showing their 'Page cannot be displayed' error message from time to time. After a few minutes browsing might

be possible again. Also Windows restart is not guaranteed to fix the problem all the time. Currently have no sure remedy for this problem when it happens. Should also mention that I have multiple other PC's on my WLAN (2x Vista, 2x XP), never had any such browsing problems with those other PC's.
I have tried several things :
- Uninstalled McAfee (came pre-installed) using Add/Remove programs and afterwards using McAfee's own rigorous de-installer tool (MCPR.exe)
- ipconfig /flushdns
- Tried Firefox 3.5 as an alternative browser, same problem there.
- disabled TCP autotuning (see here:
http://thesystemadministrator.com/Th...twork_(Vista)/ )
- Rebuilding the Windows IP stack using 'netsh winsock reset'
- Running Internet Explorer in Addons-excluded-mode
I would like to know if anyone knows of this problem, I read the 'solution' on the mentioned thread 'IE7 intermittent failure to access URLs etc ' but don't believe that will be my solution as the router itself functions properly, as proven by the other concurrently running PC's on its WLAN.
Have some hope that Nemo2000 has solved his long-running problem meanwhile?!? Sure hope it's not reverting to XP ;-) And yeah, it's my wife's laptop as well, so hope not to lose any credit there...
