Firefox in, IE8 out, now dialing on its own
Here's the deal. I have an old computer that runs Windows XP Professional. I have Dial up for internet service....yes my virtual world is slow, which I am used to but now it is really slow.

I decided to dump the whole Microsoft IE8 which just wears on my system. I installed Firefox and have the most up to date version (I love it). So, I uninstalled IE8, but then IE7 appeared ~ I uninstalled IE7 thinking I have removed it from my system. Lately my computer has been dialing itself when it shouldn't be and I have always had it set for Never Dial a Connection. I have to manually dial it.

First I ran a system scan from Avast....nothing
Then I ran a system scan from MalwareBytes....nothing
I just finished a scan with SuperAntiSpyware....nothing but garden variety cookies.

So, being computer literate, I ran a Hijack This and here it is....please note ~ I see IE6 running. Are you kidding me......does some version of this crap need to be in the background for Firefox to work? I have my system streamlined to be efficient in my slow world so the less stuff running, the better. I also noticed that toward the end of the list, my Avast is missing some files ~ now where did they run off to?

You have an outdate version of HijackThis.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

You're Avast antivirus might not be working the way it should be since some files are missing.

Uninstall Avast with the Avast! Uninstall Utility. Then, reinstall it.

Really don't want to have to do that.....the reinstalling from the web will take a very long time over the dial up. Besides the whole Avast thing....what is your take on the IE thing? Can you actually get rid of it? Because if it is actually running in the background while I am on-line with Firefox it is using system resources, right? Let me know what you think while I ponder the Avast situation.

Don't you have the Avast installer on your hard drive?

OK, if you are absolutely certain that your computer has been dialing by itself, and you've checked all your settings correctly, you might be facing a dialer issue. A dialer would have entered you computer with the help of malware.

In this case, I would strongly recommend that you click on the Report button and kindly ask to be moved to the Malware Removal forum.

If you indeed have a malware related dialer in there, your phone bill will go up dramatically...

Phanton, could it simply be one of my programs trying to get an update? I really hate to say this but this started after my attempted removal of IE although I checked the settings. This morning for example as soon as the system was up and running I heard my modem. As if, for instance, Avast wanted to get an update. If it is malware, they will be very disappointed because I do not have long distance service and it can't dial out of my area code unless that isn't an issue for them.....lol.

I went back and checked the Avast and in the program settings the virus data is set to update automatically, and every 240 minutues. Dial up is checked. I'm thinking it is the culprit. My AT&T Worldnet does not give an option for "never dial a connection" that is in the Internet section of Windows that I betcha relates to IE. So ~ I changed it to manual update and I will wait and see if I have any auto dialing the rest of the day. If not I will be back to take the Move to Malware Removal.....Thank you so much for your time.
