Solved: Ie8 not recognising web sites where shortcut has no file ext
i have a sony vista laptop
IE 8

and it does not open the following type of files from a google search
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...le/DG_10012526

Unknown file type

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_fishing

Unknown file type

BUT
However on my XP laptop with IE7 - it opens the first file ok and in adobe reader - so knows its a PDF file
and the 2nd it opens as a webpage
so seems to know without a file extension

shortcuts on the IE7 system are the same

Intersting even on this post
The IE8 cant find the files
IE7 opens the links OK

Run IE8 in IE7 mode?
I am using IE7 and have no detailed suggestions for IE8.

I clicked both links and both open to webpages.
There is no PDF file for the first link?

I never installed IE8, so can only go with what I read.

From 2 different MS sites:

Internet Explorer 8 has three different layout modes:

"Quirks: backwards compatibility with Internet Explorer 5 rendering behavior

Internet Explorer 7 Standards: backwards compatibility with Internet Explorer 7 JavaScript and layout behavior

Internet Explorer 8 Standards: latest features, including the CSS 2.1-compliant layout engine and DOM/HTML breaking changes

By default, Internet Explorer will attempt to display content by using its most standards-compliant mode: Internet Explorer 8 Standards mode. To allow the existing site content to remain compatible with Internet Explorer 8, site operators may designate the correct layout mode for Internet Explorer 8 clients by using a new compatibility mode switch."

"Compatibility View
Internet Explorer 8 is a new release and some websites may not yet be ready for the new browser. Click the Compatibility View toolbar button to display the website as viewed in Internet Explorer 7, which will correct display problems like misaligned text, images, or text boxes. This option is on a per site basis and all other sites will continue to display with Internet Explorer 8 functionality. When you click on the Compatibility View button for a site, you don’t need to do it again as the next time you visit that site the browser will show it in compatibility mode. If for some reason you’d like to go back to browsing with Internet Explorer 8 functionality on that site, simply click the Compatibility View button again."

Yes. I just meant that you didn't have any more problems now
that you went back to IE7.
