Smile Solved: Password Query
I want to sent up Microsoft Outlook for email but after putting in my details it keeps asking for a password, although I never put one in. I says it cannot connect to the incoming server. Please can you help?

In order to connect to most mail servers you need to log on with an account name and password. Enter the password for your accounts when asked to do so.

I put in an account name and email address and left the password blank. If I never put a password in, why is it asking for one? I have email accounts which I access by web mail and some how Outlook added my contacts from these accounts when it asked if I wanted to import contacts

OK, lets take this one or two small steps at a time.

1) When you created those web mail accounts, did you also create a password for each account? I am not asking for the passwords; just want to know if each account requires you to use a password to gain access.

2) Do you now wish to use MS-Outlook to send and receive e-mail messages for those same accounts?

1. I did not use any passwords when I set up the 2 accounts but it asked me to enter them. I tried the one I use for the talktalk email but it rejected them, saying the incoming had failed. although I managed to import contacts from talktalk.
2. Yes i do.

Sorry to report that I never heard of TalkTalk and have no idea what your Outlook settings need to be for them. What is the other mail service you wish to to access with Outlook.

If TalkTalk is your internet service provider, go to their website.
Sign in with your username and password, they should
have instructions there. Those are the same credentials you
need to use for MS Outlook.

Do the same for any other email providers that you plan to
install in MS Outlook. You can't get an email account without
a password, so at sometime, you did put one in.

MS Outlook will act like a mailman and deliver your emails from
those accounts to your computer. There won't be any emails to
access directly from the websites once you set it up. If you do
still want them left on the websites, in addition to reading them
on your computer, there should be an option to leave them there.

Unless you can store unlimited emails on the server, you have to
specify how many days to leave them there (in MS Outlook) - or
your online mailboxes will fill up and you won't be able to get your
emails. Or you can delete them manually off the websites, if you
wish.

I've never seen or heard of any email address that didn't require a password to access it. If there were no password, anyone could check your email and read it from any computer so long as they had your email address. It's true that you might not have had to type one in every time to read your mail and get to your inbox, but that doesnt mean one does not exist, when this email account was created whenever that was, it did have a password set up as well, if you do not know it, you would have to get it from whomever you got the email from in the first place. here are outlook instructions from talktalk's website for outlook:

# Open Microsoft Outlook and click Next.
# You will be asked if you want to upgrade from a previous or older email package, such as Outlook Express. Unless you are upgrading, select Do Not Upgrade and click Next.
# Select Yes and click Next again.
# Tick the box labelled Manually configure server settings or additional server types and click Next.
# Select Internet E-mail and click Next.
# Enter your name and your TalkTalk email address in the first two boxes.
# Select POP3 from the Account Type drop-down list.
# Enter mail.talktalk.net in the Incoming mail server box.
# Enter smtp.talktalk.net in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box.
# Enter your TalkTalk email address in the User Name box and enter your password in the Password box.
# Click Next and then click Finish.

notice the next to last step advised you to put in your email address and password.
that shows us that talktalk does use them. likely you will have to call them. here is a link to where i found the setup info on their website.

Since I have never used TalkTalk there is no guarantee that this will work but try using your full e-mail address for the user name. I need to do that for my ISP provided e-mail accounts.

Then also enter the password you that used to create that account with talktalk.
