Internet connection problems
In the past few days, I have been unable to connect with some of my websites. I ran a diagnostic for connectivity of internet explorer and received the following message: Windows annot connect to the internet using HTTP,HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer.
Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port(443) and FTP port (21). Your might need to contact your ISP or the manufacturer of your firewall software.

Can you possibly help me solve this problem? Regards,
Thanks. mnedil

I removed your email address since it will just give you more spam.

Only some web sites cannot be accessed? Is there any pattern?

What firewall or security suite do you have on the machine?

I was previously using my internet provider protection i.e. rogers online protection. I started to have messages that my online protection had not been used for over 30 days and had to be validated. However, after calling Roger internet and speaking with 4 different individuals and 4 separate occasions, they could not resolve the problem including removing and reinstalling the online protection. I tried to get on their echat web site but was unable to connect. They told me that the problem was with the internet browser and they could not help me. Of course, the firewall was from roger online protection (zeroknowledge firewall). I have subsequently uninstalled the online protection and installed norton 360 and have the norton firewall. However, when I boot up my avanquest manager tells me that there are multiple firewalls installed even though I have turned off the windows firewall. I have not gone through the registry to see if there are other firewalls. I am able to get onto the internet and numerous websites but when I check my connectivity, I still get the message that I posted. I don't know whether this will affect my contact with other websites and I have not tried to download my ISP's online protection. As I stated above, I was unable to let them take control of my computer to diagnose the problem, I was unable to connect after 3 or 4 tries. My computer runs window xp professional. I was able to run liveupdate from norton when I installed norton 360. Any help would be appreciated. I did notice in google that some other individuals had the same problem with their internet but they were not able to connect ot web sites at all. I can still connect with the web sites that I usually use. Thanks for your interest. regards, Moe (mnedil)

It certainly looks like its a firewall problem, have you thought about looking in your add/remove programs in the control panel ? you should see what firewalls you have installed in there ...if there are any uninstall them and just use Windows firewall for the moment ....I have found Comodo to be a good free firewall that performs very well indeed ....

internet connection problems
To telecom69,
I looked in control panel but cannot find any firewalls mentioned. They may be part of another program that I am not aware of. I am using Avanaquest Connection Manager and when it starts up it indicates that I have several firewall active. I guess I will have to go into the registry to locate the firewalls. Any other suggestions would be helpful since I don't particularly want to mess with the registry. Thanks for your help. Moe (mnedil)

You can use Task Manager to see what applications and tasks are running.

You can also get a HijackThis log, and if you want post it here for others to review.

Hi mnedil,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

The first step I suggest that you take is to reset the Norton 360 Firewall to see if that helps.

1. Open Norton 360 and then select the "Settings" link at the top of the window.

2. Select the "Firewall" icon and, under the "General Settings" tab, click on the "Reset" link next to Firewall Reset . Click "Yes" when the dialog box appears.

3. Select the "Apply" and then "Close" buttons at the bottom of the window and then close the Norton 360 window.

4. Launch Internet Explorer and try to access the sites you were having problems reaching. If you still cannot access these sites, download the latest version of Firefox and attempt to access the sites using that browser.

If you still have problems connecting, please follow the instructions in the document below.

Help with not being able to connect to a specific website with Norton 360 installed

If running the tools in the above document do not resolve the issue, make sure you click the "What if this didn't work" link at the bottom of the document for further assistance.

Thank you,
Mike

Internet connection problems
Hi mnedil
Firstly I am no computer expert, but I had a identical problem. I was using PC Tools Antivirus and Threatfire Firewall and I think there was a problem with updates. I firstly uninstalled both applications totally, turned windows firewall off, then I did a system restore. I was up and running again, then I reinstalled everthing, switched it all back on and I have not had a internet connection problem 2 months later. Hope it helps.

gringo47,
Thank you for your advice. My problem seems to be related to a hidden firewall (Zero knowledge firewall, named freedom firewall). I have gone through the regular searches in windows and cannot find it. I also have deleted all references to freedom, zero knowledge and radial point (which is the new name for zero knowledge). All this started when I downloaded rogers online protection. I have subsequently uninstalled rogers online protection but the firewall is still there. Rogers tech support doesn't know about this firewall ( which they should since it is part of there protection package). I have installed Norton 360 but if I don't turn off the firewall, my avanquest connection manager tell me that there are several firewall active and may be interfering with connections. I tried to do a system restore to before I downloaded rogers online protection but system restore fails. I don't know where to go from here but I will keep on trying. I don't know why system restore does not work in windows and also in safe mode. Thanks anyhow! mnedil

Hi mnedil,

The System Restore feature may not be working if the "Norton Product Tamper Protection" feature is enabled in Norton 360. This feature is enabled by default and it stops threats from disabling Norton 360. Please carefully follow the instructions below to temporarily disable this feature.

1. Open Norton 360 and select the "Settings" link at the top of the window and then select the "Administrative Settings" link.

2. Under the "Product Security" turn the switch next to "Norton Product Tamper Protection" to the "Off" setting. Click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window and then when the dialog appears, choose "Until System Restart" and then the "OK" button.

3. Restart your computer into normal Windows mode and then carry out the System Restore.

4. When the restoration is complete, you should try to remove the other firewall component.and then restart your computer.

After you follow these steps, launch Norton 360 and manually run LveUpdate by select "Check for Updates" under the "PC Security" bubble. If any updates are installed, restart your computer and then enable the Norton Firewall and let me know if you receive any prompts, etc.

Thanks,
Mike

Internet connection problems
To Michael York,

I am sorry about the delay in sending you a response to your advice. During the interval I was in contact with techsupport at radialpoint (where freedom firewall originates). I ran some programs that they suggested and cleaned some files as well but it did not clear the freedom firewall and subsequently they referred me back to Rogers (my internet provider) and tech support at Rogers were unable to solve the problem. They said that they woul relay a report back to Radialpoint but I have not heard from them since. I tried doing a system restore with Norton Product Tamper Protection turned off but was unsuccesful with system restore at at least 7 different dates (even in safe mode). Any other suggestions. Thanks for you help and input. Moe (mnedil)
