Red face Cannot download software (IE or hijackthis, etc) & Internet Options Doesnt Work!!!
Okay so to make a long story short, I was having major issues with my computer in general. It took me about two weeks to go through it and "fix" it. As of now, I have internet access, have run MULTIPLE spyware, adware, malware, virus scans, removed threats, and cleaned everything out.

As of yesterday, I was able to use everything on my computer with FULL functionality, and WOW, did I feel like I accomplished something!

My computer hadn't been online for a while (a few months) and as you can imagine, everything in the world wanted to update from Microsoft.

Each installation at a time, I restarted my system.

This morning, to my enjoyment, IE7 did not work AT ALL. I couldn't get on the internet as this was the only available program.

I restored my computer to a time yesterday PRIOR to installing ANY microsoft updates. I utilized the SEARCH resource off the START menu, and was able to view the web via the SEARCH THE INTERNET option here. To my discovery, it states that microsoft is having issues with IE7 working if it was installed BEFORE the ServicePack3 was. As well, you cannot uninstall IE7 until you uninstall SP3.

At this point, I have REMOVED the SP3 Update (via add/remove programs)

I attempted to uninstall IE7 and install IE8, neither was successful.

I NOW have full internet access however certain things are not working.

I CANNOT download IE8 nor can I download anything else, I tried the hijackthis so I could create a LOG entry per research I did on your site, but I cannot do this either. Downloading is simply UNRESPONSIVE. It does nothing.

I searched through files and IE8 isn't listed in programs, however, there is a log and a MAIN log in my WINDOWS folder which states the program was installed, but there is a lot of technical computer language that I do not understand in the log as well.

Furthermore, and how I realized I still had an IE problem, I do not have a way to access TOOLS or any toolbar at the top of my IE windows. There is no FILE, EDIT, VIEW, or ANYTHING listed in my IE window. I attempted to access internet options through Control Panel and through my computer, but have no access ... if I click on it, its almost like it briefly (sometimes - and if you blink you could miss it) pops open and small window at the upper left side of my screen, then disappears, and does NOTHING.

ONE LAST ISSUE, and probably related, I cannot right click on links or even just text on the internet, (as in to copy text or open a new window) - its like my right click is disabled

I have attempted the netsh winsock reset as discussed in a forum already posted on your website, NOTHING changed.

Any help or advice you could give would be MOST helpful

try using another browser like firefox, although,as you cant download you will have to download it elsewhere.
i used ie for years, and it always drove me crazy with errors, shutdowns and the like.i now use firefox, and it hasn't malfunctioned or crashed at all.i know its not the solution your looking for,but it may be the end of your problem

The IEFix Utility could work for you.

If you can't download, try the following:

Click on Start > Run > and type regedit.

Navigate to the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3

Check the following DWORD Value: (make sure it's set to "0")

Value Name: 1803
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = downloads enabled, 3 = downloads disabled)

If no luck, download the IEFix Utility from a working computer and copy it to a USB flash drive. Then, plug it into your faulty computer to run the program.
