Solved: Outlook Expresse 6 accepts to open only when I start the machine .
Hi there,

I have recently changed from adsl to fibre optics and all of a sudden my mailbox Outlook Express 6 closes down and refuses to open. The only way I can acces my mail is to start or restart my machine and press the mailbox key on my keyboard and coax the mail reception tab in the left margin since the central panel closes the program. My operating system is Windows XP SP 3.

Can anyone help me please?

I have looked at the task manager and the program msimn.exe fonctions but flickers when Outlook Express is working.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Outlook Express (that is part of Internet Explorer 6) is no longer supported by Microsoft. The current version of the mail program is called Windows Live Mail. It is part of the Windows Live Essentials, that it free from Microsoft (http://download.live.com/).

You might have better luck if you upgrade your mail client.

Is there an alternative solution please?
Thank you Courtney, this shall be my last stand solution since my old Outlook Express has remained stable all this time while my sister's Windows Live Mail has bothered her a lot and still does.

Isn't there another solution, please?

Just for info, I'm using Firefox as a browser since IE8 has to close down all the time.

If there is no alternative, how do I transfer my sent letter folder to the Windows Live folder?

Hi Tellmemore and welcome to TSG.

Before doing anything too drastic, I would try a New Identity.
If your Account information is correct and OE sends and receives okay, you can take a shortcut to setting up the account in the New Identiy.

Right click empty area of the desktop. Click New>Folder. Name it Mailbackup.
Open OE.
Click Tools>Accounts>Mail tab>select account>Export and Export the account as an .iaf file to Mailbackup.

To create the New Identity:
Click File>Identities>Add new Identity.
Name it something different from the original so you can tell which Identity is which.
Switch to the new Identity.
Cancel Internet connection wizard.
In the New Identity click Tools>Accounts>Mail tab>Import and Import the .iaf file from Mailbackup.

To set the New Identity as the default that opens when you start OE or click a Mail to: link.
File>Identities>Manage Identities.
Check "use this identity when starting a program".
Select the new identity in both boxes and close the Manage Identities box.
Send yourself a message to test the account.
If the New Identity sends and receives okay, and if the problems are not present, you can Import your Contacts and Mail into it.

If the problems carry over to the New Identity, I would say it's a problem with the main program files or registry keys.
In that case, you could try to repair it by running sfc /scannow or do as Courtney suggests and change mail clients (either Windows Live Mail or my personal favorite, Thunderbird).

Ureka!
Thank you Throoper, for your welcome and the information which I will keep in store.

As the problem did not concern either the incoming or outgoing e-mails but just the program not re-opening after the initial start or restart of the machine, I looked into the anti-malware protection that I have: a-square Anti-Malware just by chance and found the Outlook program, msimn.exe blocked.

I put it under surveillance like all the others and everything is working perfectly!

Thanks again ,

Yea!!!

Thanks for posting your solution. I would never have suspected that and it's definitely going in my file of things to look at for OE problems.
