Setting it up is different for different versions of Outlook, double check your steps.

Is your work Outlook mail account on a Microsoft Exchange Server by some chance? If so, Exchange Server needs to be configured to support POP3 access from Gmail.

Connecting POP And IMAP Clients To MS Exchange Server.

EDIT: Another option for Exchange server might be to have copies of your incoming e-mails forwarded to your Gmail account.

I just edited my earlier post.

Exchange server would either need to have POP3 access enabled in order to allow Gmail to fetch mail from the Exchange server -OR- User mail forwarding can be enabled on the Exchange server to allow the user to forward copies of incoming e-mails to their Gmail or any other address.
