Solved: Can't Resize IE8 Browser Window in Windows 7
I have my "gadgets" off to the right hand side, and I want to be able to see them while having an IE8 web page open. I've resized, tried all the ctrl-shift, alt, close with the X, close with the close, exit, etc. options that used to work in Vista.

I can't imagine that it would be a Windows issue, but, I was running Vista with IE8 and had it working the way I want.

You can't resize the IE8 window? Or, it won't reopen to the desired size?

Hi Terry, thanks for the reply.

It will reopen to the full size. That's no problem. What I want it to do now, is stay the same smaller size that I drag it to, in order for me to be able to have the gadget toolbar on the right hand side remain visible at all times.

Right click on the line or icon you use to launch IE and select 'Properties.' Presumably one of the tabs will be 'Shortcut.' If on that page the value of 'Run:' is 'Maximized' we have found the culprit. Change it to 'Normal window.'

One other quick question, if you have time. It seems to me that before in Vista, you couldn't see the desktop background under the items (the gadget items)....I could be wrong on that, but, it seems like it had a similar opaque bar down the complete side?

You're welcome.

The Vista Sidebar pane, as I remember it, has a slight shadow to it, but can be seen through.

Just a note if I may. When I started using Windows 7 I did the same as I did with Vista--all the gadgets on the right border and my browser window shifted over so I could see the gadgets. I've now got the gadgets at different places on the desktop and my browser window is snug along the right side. When I want to glance at the gadgets I just hover over the "show desktop" rectangle at the lower right. Gives me more real estate. Of course, that wouldn't work for somebody who needs to keep an eye on one or more gadgets in real time.

This may answer my question, but, not in a good way...........

I do recall sidebar.exe running when I checked task manager and msconfig/startup. I do not see it running now.....and yes, I like to be able to see everything at a glance. Time, money exchange, cpu/ram usage, and of course, the weather

If you have any active gadgets, sidebar.exe has to be running for them to display, but they are no longer docked to The Sidebar as they were under Vista. Does create a certain amount of confusion.
