Solved: Cannot get Yahoo Mail As Default E-mail in IE 8
This will take some explaining,

Although I have used Google for my default search engine I LOVE Yahoo Mail. However, today I uninstalled Office 97 and upgraded to Office 2003 and everything went well. In Firefox, I was able to set Yahoo Mail as my default e-mail program when clicking on links. However, in IE 8, the only thing that shows up is Microsoft Outlook. Yahoo wants me to download Yahoo Toolbar and/or Yahoo Messenger in order to make Yahoo Mail appear as a program choice in IE's program's list. I tried both and it does neither. I uninstalled both because I don't want more toolbar crap on my computer.

There used to be a simple "Make Yahoo Mail my default mail appett plug in about three years ago" without any toolbars in IE. Even though I don't use MS Outlook as is customary, I opened up each of the MS Office applications just to see that they worked in MS Office 2003, (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint) and I canceled out of the Wizard.

What I want to be able to do is to get that old plug in that Yahoo provided to put Yahoo Mail in my IE Programs List again so I can set it as the default mail client in IE. Also note that when I had Office 97 even on my old Windows 98 machine, whenever I would reinstall it, it would always REMOVE my Yahoo Mail Client, so I know this is not just related to this computer, It is like Outlook is saying, "No no no, you have to have Outlook as the default client." So if I could get that plug in back for IE to get Yahoo Mail back in the programs list, that would be great!

I am running Windows XP (SP-3) All updates installed. I use IE 8 and Firefox 3.5.7

FIXED!!!!

For some reason, my old Send through Yahoo Mail Settings were retailed when right-file clicking. When I did it the first time, there was a check mark to make Yahoo Mail the default. But it said that the default client was not properly installed. So what I did was I went back into the programs list to make Outlook my default e-mail program even though I don't use Outlook! Clicking on the web link to "send to" brought up the Outlook Compose Message screen as if I had the program. But this time, I just canceled out of that. Said "don't save the message."

I than right-clicked on a file, and enabled send through Yahoo Mail and it WORKED! Although Yahoo Mail isn't in my programs list, I don't care! I think what was happening was Outlook needed at least one instance of a completed and properly functioning walk through with the program. When that process was complete and Outlook knew that I wanted to send the file through Yahoo instead of Outlook, it accepted Yahoo as the default e-mail linkage.

(The steps above illustrate the solution to getting Yahoo Mail to be the default client if not oriiginally accepted by MS Office 2003 while using IE 8 after Office's install.) No Yahoo Toolbars or Yahoo Messenger programs needed!

I understand you are satisfied but maybe this will still
be of interest to you (or others).

Thanks!

I had tried that, but found out from Yahoo that they have modified their Messaging software so that this feature may not work. It did not work for me. In the future, I might send a feedback form to Yahoo requesting a simple "set Yahoo Mail as the Default option." This feature is available in Firefox with no needed toolbars or messaging services needed to be installed.

Yahoo for IE is insisting on the installation of Yahoo Toolbar to set Yahoo Mail as the default in IE. Anyway, my "fixed" post above at least still works!

I use Windows XP. But if anyone has ideas for setting Yahoo Mail as the default in Vista or Windows 7, you can also post your ideas here.

Darn! Yahoo disables various ways so quick,
I can't keep track. YPOPS! is always broken
too.

Thanks for the heads up.

I think I have a download link for the small
Yahoo! Default Program? See if this is the one?
The only instructions I had, are printed below
the link. Hope that helps.

http://download.yahoo.com/dl/installs/yinst.cab

"To make Yahoo! your default email
Download cab file. Find or create a folder to hold the file

you are downloading & save it there. Open Window
Explorer & locate the file. Then open the file by double
clicking it or right click & Open.

Opening the file creates a new sub folder with these 2 files.
Right click the yinst.inf file & click Extract to get the next
box. When the selected folder is highlighted, click Extract."

But just the same, as everything is working now, I am not gonna install that. (Don't wanna fix what's not broken.) BUT, I will keep that as an option in mind for future users!!! This is so much easier in Firefox!!!
