Is it Cox or me?
I've had Cox High Speed dsl for about a year. I haven't had any problems with my internet service at all; in fact, I've been quite pleased with the service compared w/what I used to go through with Verizon. Lately, very intermittently but enough that I notice it, I'll lose access to the internet. I perform the basics--check connections, release and renew my connection, and it'll usually come back on.

My question is this: what is the best way to determine if it's something on MY end that's causing the loss of connection or if it's something on Cox's end? When I do a connectivity check, it always mentions something about "can't find DNS server".

They don't seem to be doing any work in my area when this occurs nor does my cable tv go out.

If you get this site to show up then your ISP is working.
Then put the link you want to check out and find out if it is "down for everyone or justme"

This wont work for me because it's not any particular site I can't access. It's a complete internet connection failure because the cable, send, and receive lights on my modem are off (when this happens). As mentioned, I perform all the obligatory tests, reboot my modem & computer, etc., etc. When I click on my Firefox icon, the page tries to load then I get the error message "problem loading page". Then I try try accessing the internet via Internet Explorer, same thing.

It doesn't happen often but when it does I want to be able to know that I should either a) call Cox Tech Support or b) fiddle with it on my own because it's something on my end.

Thanks for the info though.

do all the following ping and ipconfig /all tests - when its working correctly and repeat when it disconnects - post back both sets of results here - in seperate replies - so we can tell the difference
whats the make and model of the modem / router

If you can ping an ip address and not a name that indicates a DNS issue

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all
-> (Vista or Windows 7 - enter the following in the Search box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and
control key + V to paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{Ping Tests}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping {plus the number thats shown against the default gateway shown in above ipconfig /all}
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
post back results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
