Question Solved: Can access some sites but not others, no email
All, any help deeply appreciated.

Everything has been running fine. I got a laptop, wanted to access my wireless router, and found I had forgot the password. So I reset the router, and then set it all back up again, and here my troubles begin, as follows.

System:

1. 1 desktop and 1 laptop
2. XP, both systems
3. Norton AV, both systems
4. Router: Linksys WRT54G firmware 2.04.4
5. Problem exists with BOTH IExplorer AND Thunderbird.

Router Settings

1. PPPoe
2. NO entries in either port forwarding or port triggering
3. Firewall enabled, however disabling it makes no difference
4. UPnP off
5. WEP

Description of Issue

1. Type of sites I can access fully: backyardmetalcasting.com, cnn.com, this website, webmail.earthlink.net
2. Examples of sites with PARTIAL access. the hijackthis website, I can see the website but not d/l the app. Ebay: I can do everything on ebay EXCEPT access my account (stops at the login)
3. Examples of sites with NO access: www.paypal.com, www.woodnet.net Login page.
4. Behavior on "no access" is the status bar will show (for example) "connected to paypal.com" then "waiting on paypal.com" then "transferring data from secureepics.ebay.com" and there it sits and sits with no further progress. My tried to pay several bills to several places and got the same behaviour.
5. With email, Thunderbird in the progress bar says "connected to pop.mindspring.com" then "host contacted sending login information" then nothing until a pop up box appears saying "connection to server pop.mindspring.com timed out". Note that I am COMPLETELY CERTAIN the username/password is correct.

Logs

1. I can't access any sites (such as hijackthis) that will allow me to download a logger. The exception was one of your advertisers that allowed me to download sysinfo.exe. I ran that, and Norton didn't like that at all, so I nuked it and ran a full system scan.
2. Incoming Router Log

Incoming Log Table Source IP Destination Port Number 222.186.13.212 3246 222.186.13.212 8090 222.186.13.212 socks
3. Outgoing Router Log

Outgoing Log Table LAN IP Destination URL/IP Service/Port Number 192.168.2.100173.194.10.222www 192.168.2.10064.4.241.49www 192.168.2.10064.4.241.49https 192.168.2.10072.247.176.167https 192.168.2.100173.239.65.23www 192.168.2.100198.185.2.107pop3 192.168.2.100143.127.102.30https 192.168.2.100198.185.2.107pop3 192.168.2.10064.210.100.72www 192.168.2.100143.127.102.30https 192.168.2.10164.210.100.73www 192.168.2.10063.245.209.93www 192.168.2.10064.210.100.9www 192.168.2.10064.210.100.32www 192.168.2.100143.127.102.125www 192.168.2.100173.239.65.21www
4. I tried pinging some of the above IP's. The www's work, as does the POP3, however, the https is 100% loss.

All: I really appreciate any help you can give.

If by "Norton AV" you mean Norton Anti-Virus, and its data definitions are up to date, it's probably not causing the problem. But, I don't see how that would be complaining about sysinfo.exe when you run it; it should scan for viruses when you download it, but that's all.

If by "Norton AV" you mean any Norton product other than the Anti-Virus uninstall it and run Symantec's Norton Removal Tool. Note that the link gives instructions for saving your Product key so that you can reinstall after testing.

You may have malware, or you may have several different problems, but the common denominator and top suspect is Norton if other than the Anti-Virus product.

Terry, thanks for answering my post. One machine is running "Norton 360" (desktop) and the other "Norton Internet Security 2010" (laptop).

Could you clarify something for me? Assuming it is the Norton 360 that is causing the problem on the box, why would the problem manifest with the router reset, as opposed to manifesting sometime in the 10 months after 360 was installed?

All of this was working fine for more months than I can remember, until I reset the router this last weekend.

I think tonight I'll unplug the desktop from the router and plug it directly into the DSL modem and see what happens. Maybe it will, or won't, clarify something.

Two words: random event. Or, if you prefer, one word: coincidence.

Good troubleshooting step.

Terry: I plugged the desktop directly into the DSL modem, and the problem is COMPLETELY solved.

Then, when I plug it BACK into the router, the problem comes back. I did this a few times to be sure. The problem is in the router settings. Any ideas?

That suggests an idea or two. Please let me gather a little more info ...

Brand and model of the DSL modem?

Also please show for a PC connected to the modem ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I thought maybe the modem was actually a modem/router combo, but that doesn't seem to be the case. So, I really don't have another idea. Seems to be the router defective or Norton corrupted or mis-configured.

Terry, another possible hint. I was trying to get on GameRanger and it said something about me using a "Port Restricted NAT cone router" that would prohibit other players from connecting to me.

Could this be topical to my problem?

Question Internet Explorer cannot display the web page
I am able to access some sites on the internet. However, for others, I get the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page" Some sites take a long time before that same message comes up. I tried to use the windows option to fix the page. However, the reply is that some sort of phishing took place but something is preventing the connection. The page I am trying to get on is a log-in page connected to my job. I have spend hours, no, days trying to fix this problem. Please help.

First guess is that before the router reset to factory defaults you had port(s) forwarded for that game, but you have not yet re-configured that.

Terry, FYI, I decided "to hell with it, this has taken enough of my time". So, I wussed out and bought a new router. Problem totally solved.
