Sound randomly doesn't work on internet

On a laptop my family uses, the sound goes out while using Firefox. I've been told that sound was coming when watching a DVD, but right when Firefox was brought up, there e would be no sound when watching videos. I don't know if the sound works while doing anything else on the internet.
And the drivers should be up to date.
Anything I could try to fix the problem? Could it be updating Adobe's Flash player?

Have you tried various programs to make fairly certain that it's just Firefox that is the issue?
