Red face New computer - File Transfer, Emails, Contacts, Favorites
just got a new computer (Windows 7) , (finally after 9 years) and I would like to transfer my emails, contacts, and favorites to the new computer.

I have read something about the PST file BUT dont wanna pull any of the "Crap" stuff over to the new pc such that it slows down things.......

can you please assist at how to do this?
where do I find the PST in the old computer (XP)

once I get it on a flash drive, how and where do I place it in the new computer? I am assuming from what I have read that I then will have all my emails, contacts, and favorites?

the new computer is Windows 7 and I am using the Windows Live as my email program, IE for browser

any other advice on pulling over my other files would be appreciated

thanks in advance

Hi,
Not sure about email & contacts, but for Favourites have you looked at Xmarks (freeware)? It syncs & also is a useful backup just in case ...

http://www.xmarks.com/about/features/bookmark_sync

Hope that's of some help?

I would like to hear from others on this as I am almost positive that IF I can locate and transfer what is known as the "PST" file it contains all of what I am looking for??? I just need to know the answers to my questions above???

adding another program to this computer is probably not an option as it is sooo slow right now and bogs down already.

I am almost positive that this PST file has everything I am looking in it, just need to know where to find it, and then how to transfer it to the NEW system

thanks

Where is my Outlook "PST" file located?

This Windows 7 - Importing mail from Outlook to Windows Live Mail article seems pretty confusing to me--mixing Outlook and OE--but the point is that simply copying a .PST file to the new computer will do no or little good by itself.

On one of the computers you will need to export the information, and then import that information into Windows Live Mail.

My advice for copying other files is to just use your backups, unless they are not in a format to just copy onto the new hard drive. In that case network the machines, or copy the data using removable media--CD, DVD, USB flash drive, external drive, etc.

Some people like the Windows 7 Easy Transfer, but I like more control and knowledge of what's happening.

thanks Terry

I am still being told that this is a fairly "simple" process to get these items.....I know I have done this before (years ago) and it was....just that I dont recall how to it now......

does anyone know IF I can just find (export) the old system (on xp) PST file.......I can then IMPORT on the new Windows 7 computer and all this will be on the NEW computer?

That first article to which I linked doesn't tell you the location of your .pst file?

When I had to do something like this years ago for a neighbor I just seached for the *.pst files.

It's web-based so you don't need to add any progs, it installs in you browser (IE, Firefox or whatever)

Favorites are probably easy enough. Open Windows Explorer
to the Internet Explorer Favorites folder and copy to the new
computer. Or to a Flash drive or CD/DVD.

PST files will be of no use to Windows Live Mail. They are
only good to MS Outlook. PST files will not fit on a flash
drive anyway. You will have to extract the proper
information and import into WLM.

Probably the same for contacts. Whatever format MS Outlook
uses for contacts will not be the same for WLM.

Unfortunately, I don't use either MS Outlook or WLM so I am
not the one to provide details on the procedures.

can you let me know HOW to pull the favorites from old to the New computer?

I was told that "Windows Live Mail" is indeed the new name for Outlook Express and that the PST file is indeed still part of this system (still searching for how to transfer though)

Open Windows Explorer. Naviagate to the favorites folder.
Copy the entire favorites folder to your flash drive (if it doesn't fit,
you'll need to put it on a CD). Or hook your old hard drive up to
your new computer and copy the folder from there. You'll have
to locate where the favorites folder is, on both computers..

Outlook Express?
PST files belong to MS Outlook. Outlook Express uses .dbx files.
2 entirely different programs.

In XP the Favorites folder is in C:\Documents and Settings\<account>. In Windows 7 the folder goes in C:\Users\<account>.

To "pull" it from one computer to another you can network the computers and use file sharing, email to yourself the folder as an attachment, or copy it using external media such as a USB flash drive, external hard drive, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RW, etc.

Not exactly. Windows Live Mail is Microsoft's free successor to Windows Mail, which was their successor to Outlook Express. Neither uses .pst files.

Your question about favorites has been answered previously.

Maybe these articles will help you to understand more
about getting everything from OE to WLM. You are
talking about several separate files.
