Solved: Unable to Read External HDD
Hi,

I have 3 External Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and my PC is only able to read one out of the three -- I also tested slotting in 3 USB flash drives and all three are able to be read.
Strange thing is, I tried the same 3 External HDDs in another PC and all three are able to be read.
What could be the problem?

Hope y'all can help me out with this =/

From a quick Google search I found that this can be caused by a third party firewall, if you have one then try disabling it and then connect the drive and see if it will then load the drivers.

In the first screenshot did you try clicking on the Update Drivers button?

What is the make and model of the PC?

Tried, still unable to load.

Yes I did, said couldn't find the driver software for the device.

Have you typed this correctly, are you saying they are identical?

That is confusing, but there has to be something different about these two drives for one to work and not the other. Are the model numbers the same? Do they both appear in the Bios with the same details?

Well I did a cloning experiment on one device and the cloned device is the one that is not working. Side effects, perhaps?

How and what should I check in the BIOS?

If you boot into the Bios with the (non working) external drive/s connected look at the boot order list and see if it/they are recognised. You could also check in Disk Management to see if the drive/s are listed there. Click on Start, right click on Computer and select Manage.

Was there a problem before you made the clone?

You said in your opening post the PC could only read one out of three external drives, what is the third drive?

This free software may help USB Devices Viewer download and run it then take a screen shot with all three USB drives connected and attach it to your next post.

The third drive is also WD Scorpio Blue but of a different model.

Yes they are recognised.

If with readable HDD, it shows up as USB-HDD0 : WDC WD3200BEVT - 22ZCT0
If with unreadable HDD, it shows up as USB-HDD0 : WD3200BEVT- 75ZCT2

The USB device viewer has not helped as much as I had hoped.

I think from what has been tried that this has to be something to do with the mobo chipset drivers, have you installed the ones supplied with the motherboard? If not or you don't have the disk you can download them all from here:

For the Intel INF installation, this showed up:



For the Intel SATA Preinstall driver (For AHCI / RAID Mode) Note: Press F6 during Windows setup to read from floppy.
AND the GIGABYTE SATA2 Preinstall driver (For AHCI / RAID Mode) Note: Press F6 during Windows setup to read from floppy.

Is this installation necessary? If so, how do I install?


For the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology installation, this showed up:



As for the GIGABYTE SATA2 Driver, Marvell Console Driver (SATA3), Marvell RAID Utility (SATA3) (Please install Marvell Console Driver before install Marvell RAID Utility) and NEC USB 3.0 Driver installations, they installed properly.


And as for the Realtek Function driver for Realtek Azalia audio chip (Including Microsoft UAA Driver in English edition), Realtek LAN Driver and Realtek Ethernet Diagnostic Utility installations, I did not install them because they don't seem to be required. If they are, please inform.

External HDD still unreadable =/

have you tried deleting the device the ! from the device manger and letting the computer reinstall it?

Yes I had, and this was the result (with when trying it again): [Device driver software was not successfully installed.]
