So, up until now my Icons have been working well, recently I installed a few things and the icons have now reverted to these paper icons.



I've researched to no avail, it's told me to delete the iconcache.db, which isn't being built for some reason. I've also changed the icon size via personalization, and I've changed the color quality back and forth. I've also restarted vigorously.

If there's anything I need to do to get this working again, please help me out... I don't wanna have to format over something like this. I can change the icons back into the proper ones if it's a shortcut, but it takes 2 attempts per icon. Also, Skype doesn't want to let me change it's icon, the option is greyed out.

Try System Restore.

The iconcache.db isn't there to start with, so I cannot delete it. For some reason, it doesn't create itself.

Erm, I got an error when I tried to go to system restore properties.



Also, it says it wasn't turned on, so there's no restore points. x.x

Only application [.exe] icons seem to be affected. Also, not sure if I can make such a huge list of what was installed before, but I think it happened around the time I installed localhostr uploadr.

It didn't fix the icons... x.x

A few icons like Windows Media Player still have their icons for some reason. Just thought that might be useful info. Also, I'll try a sfc /scannow and see if that works. Please continue to offer suggestions, I'm thankful for your attempts as of yet. :3

SFC won't do much in 7. All system files are hard-linked and so it's almost impossible to corrupt them.

OK. Try this one. It was the problem with another registry the other day. If this one doesn't work, I'll build a complete one that changes all the locations. Just a bit tired at the moment.

Unzip, right-click the reg file, and Merge.

iconcache.db is there now. However, it's still not showing the icons.

EPICSteve, click start orb and type "msconfig" in the search field.
Next, click the "Services" tab and make sure everything is Enabled.
Press OK to close the msconfig window then restart your PC.

That didn't work. Is it possible I have a service disabled from the management console?

When it comes to computers, ANYTHING is possible.
Since you now have iconcache.db showing, delete it then restart your pc and let windows rebuild that file. Hopefully that will fix the icons. If it doesn't, hopefully elvandil can work with you, otherwise you'll have to wait for a trusted advisor to help you solve this issue.
