| Windows 7 Freezing and Lagging more&more I've seen this similarly happen to my pc before, and if it's the same thing (which I never found out what it was, my solution back then was to just reformat), then I don't have much time. Yesterday, while browsing on firefox, my browser started to massivly slow down, and noticed it wasn't the only thing. So I restarted and it was still slow, and startup was a bit slow. So I've restarted in safe mode to run my AVG, it stopped half way through(assuming halfway, it was scanning some system32 stuff and stopped around there. So I rebooted again into safemode with networking to download spybot S&D and run Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes detected nothing, well, nothing until it froze about an hour and three minutes in. I took the time and ran HijackThis for you guys. If this problem is similar to the problem I had once before, my computer will become slower each time it starts up until it freezes just by trying to log-in. Even worse, before that I'll loose the ability to run .exe programs. I hope you can help and I appreciate any time you can spare. 10515 bytes ________________________________________________________________________ Now, I dunno if it's relevant, but the first time I ran HijackThis in normal windows I had some problems and I got this message: ----- For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type: notepad C:\windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot. For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator'. ----- But once I restarted after a log of lagging, and ran in safemode (which this logfile is from) it ran just fine. Once again, thanks for your time. |

Go to Control Panel - User Accounts. Select Change User Account Control Settings. Move the slider down to Never Notify - then click OK. Restart the computer. HiJackThis should now work without displaying that message. Also post the uninstall log from Hjt log Start HiJackThis. Click > Open The Misc Tools Section button. Click > Open Uninstall Manager. Click > Save List. Save the uninstall list file on your desktop. It will then open in Notepad. Copy-and-Paste the uninstall list in the reply box. Run a system file checker Click Start. Type cmd in search box Right click cmd.exe to run as administrator. Type SFC /SCANNOW Check Device Manager - a faulty driver may be one of the problems. Click the + sign against all entries to expand what is listed. Check for exclamation marks. http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm |

| After I changed that control setting to never notify, it took the laptop a long long time to get from the starting windows logo to the login screen, like 5 to 7 minutes. Hjt did run smoothly though. | After running SFC /SCANNOW my AVG popped up with an occuring error in the avgmfapx.exe. I think after this I'll be switching to ZoneAlarm's anyway, lol. Anyway, after the scan was 100% complete, it read underneath" ---"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. ---Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log Since the log was so long, I attached it to this post if that's ok. If posting the log itself would help make things easier, let me know. Ok, problem with that, when I tried to attach I got the following message, "Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing. If this occurred unexpectedly, please inform the administrator and describe the action you performed before you received this error." I'll try to get it posted. ______________________________ I checked the to see if anything needed Driver updates. The only ones that needed updating were Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, which I updated, and under Other devices, 2 Bluetooth Peripheral Devices listed that when updating over net resulted in, "Windows was unable to install your Bluetooth Peripheral Device. Windows could not find driver software for your device. If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software." They have little yellow /!\ under them, so I assume they needed updating. UPDATE: Also, it's taking forever for Windows to shut down. Earlier I had to force it off. Both these times it asked me if I wanted to force explorer.exe to shut down. This time Wind7 is installing 8 updates. I know better than to force a shutdown during updates, lol. | You have some Norton files -Norton PC Checkup\Engine and Avg installed. Although Norton is not listed in the uninstall log. Is ZoneAlarm just their Firewall or their security suite? Norton and Avg will conflict with each other as they try and protect your Pc. Removing Norton files would be a good move. http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal...NRT_d4749.html The avgmfapx.exe.error after running sfc /scannow may mean Avg needs updating or you may have to re-install to correct a driver problem. The CBS.log - always it seems, show some files are corrupted. You can attached the log - do not post unattached, it will take up a lot of space and may not tell us much. --- Click Win 7 start icon In the search box. Type msconfig Click on the Start Up Tab. Write down carefully what is listed and post the list here. Or post a screenshot. http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_...g_a_Screenshot |

| I'm going to give you my 2 cents worth, and then I'll leave you with blues_harp28. Get rid of AVG and Norton and ZoneAlarm. Run the AVG and Norton removal tools afterwards to get rid of their leftover "debris". Install Microsoft Security Essentials. Use the Windows 7 built-in firewall. ---------------------------------------------------------- |

| Attempted to post, but got an error, hope I can remember what I typed up. -_- Got rid of Norton, thanks for the uninstaller. Currently attempting to uninstall AVG, but their uninstaller isn't helping much and uninstalling via "Programs and Features" is proving to be a non responsive/laggy hassle too. Perhaps I should just delete the folder itself? Still unable to attach the CBS.log file, I can try emailing it if you'd like until the admin replies to my message about not being able to. Update: It seems to me like it's explorer.exe itself that's having a hard time doing and loading anything. And I'm working on getting that msconfig list for ya... just cutting through some lag right now. Last edited by dbguru16; 14-Jun-2012 at 09:29 PM.. |

| Here's the msconfig list. The doubles seem to have the same Manufacturer, Command and Location exactly down to the file name. Those you see "(unselected)" by means it's not selected, no check in the checkbox. Some of these I figured out what they were and deselcted them myself, because after running a minimum of 37 to 44 processes in WinXP on my old laptop, when I saw as many as 70-something processes running in Win7, I thought surely I could knock down the number of processes a bit. And keep in mind that this laptop has been running perfectly fine for over half a year now, so it becomes hard to believe that some of these solutions currently underway could be the problem to why my computer is taking uber several minutes to to simple tasks that should take a few seconds like it did last week, lol. But I trust you guys and we push on, still super thankful for the help. Now then, here's that Startup List: Adobe Acrobat Adobe Acrobat (unselected) Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Manager Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Manager (unselected) AVG Internet Security (unselected) Bluetooth Software Catalyst Control Center HD Audio Background Process HWSetup Java(TM) Platform SE Auto Updater 2 0 Java(TM) Platform SE Auto Updater 2 0 (unselected) KeNotify Application Message Center (unselected) Realtek HD Audio Manager SmartFaceVWatcher (unselected) SVPWUTIL Application (unselected) Synaptics Pointing Device Driver TOSHIBA eco Utility TOSHIBA Flash Cards TOSHIBA HDD Protection TOSHIBA HDD SSD Alert Toshiba Online Backup (unselected) TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor (unselected) TOSHIBA Power Saver TOSHIBA Service Station (unselected) TOSHIBA Sleep Toshiba Volume Regulator TOSHIBA Web Camera Application (unselected) TOSHIBA Zooming Utility (unselected ZoneAlarm ZoneAlarm Browser Security ZoneAlarm Browser Security (unselected) |

| I finally successfully got rid of AVG and ZA and the Norton stuff last night. I installed ZA firewall and anti-virus. I also was able to uninstall and delete everything regarding BlueTooth, so none of that either. Not sure why they still list something on msconfig, *shruggs*. Now that I did that, I'm going to go ahead and deselect everything and restart. As for that .log file, it's that the site's not letting me attach it. I posted the error in a previous post, I'll look for it, on way home now. Lol. Update: "Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing. If this occurred unexpectedly, please inform the administrator and describe the action you performed before you received this error." This is the error I get when I try to attach log file. I'll try after work when I get home from a different computer. And after restarting with all those things deselected on msconfigs startup except ZA, it still loading things super slowly. | The next step would be to try what called a Clean Boot - that may show what is not loading, or loading slowly at start up. Read all information. Clean Boot Win 7. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Is it only at start up, that it is still running slowly? |

| Ok, I'll give that a try, meanwhile, no, it's not just at startup, it runs slowly and will have lots of lag while I'm using it, mainly when I open or change programs. Firefox took quite a while to load earlier, and when I opened Gimp (a small photoshopping program) everything froze for a few minutes before it could be used again (firefox and the program opening along with the start menu and etc). So something lagging up the computer pretty bad. |

| My apologies that it takes me a while to get back to this. Been busy lately. Anyway, I performed the clean boot for win7 and after opening firefox, which still took a lot of lag, it seems things are opening and running quicker. It seems the lag usually occurs while firefox is first running or still running. I'll try running a game or two later when I get home. I just re-installed firefox and cleared cookies and history and such. Startup and shutdown is running better too. Last edited by dbguru16; 20-Jun-2012 at 08:54 AM.. |
