Windows 7 Administrator and Uninstall Problems
Hello All,

My problem started about a week ago and I believe it was after I installed zone alarm free firewall and or newest windows updates on my computer(windows 7 ultimate x64). When I installed it, the start menu shortcut for zonealarm showed up as if it was uninstalled, no default program icon for it. After I saw that I went to uninstall or change programs and tried removing it and it gave me this error "an error occurred while trying to uninstall zone alarm free firewall. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove zone alarm free firewall from the program and features list? yes or no". I clicked yes and it still remains in the list. I went to my temp files(%temp%) and deleted them, leaving Iswtmp locked temp folder behind saying it requires administrator privileges to delete it which my account is the true admin account. So then I downloaded and installed revo uninstaller and when I went to start it up it comes up with this error Bad Image "c:\windows\system32\msi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor support". I get this error with certain select programs such as microsoft office, revo, or mostly newly installed apps. I cannot uninstall programs thru programs and features or revo and I cannot access certain programs. I ran full scan with malwarebytes and came up with nothing, I ran ccleaner registry and cleaner, ran in safe mode, made sure windows installer is running which it is, system restore to the oldest restore point, pretty much everything besides repair or new OS install. I've been working with computers for 10 years now and never had an issue like this before. If anyone has heard of this problem or could provide some insight I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

I wanted to add that when I started a scan with Hijack This it comes up with a message that says "For some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, Hijack This may not be able to fix this.

moved to W7 forum as not likely to be a malware issue but something to do with updates

first thing to try is a system restore back to before you installed ZA & see if that cures it

Hello and thank you for the reply! I tried a system restore once again on the earliest possible restore point which was 6/16/2012 when the last critical windows update was installed. Before I did this I disabled my Avast shields and when my computer restarted after the restore it came up with this error "System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: System restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer. Temporarily disable your antivirus program and retry system restore. (0x80070005) You can try System restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error you can try an advanced recovery method. For more information, see What is recovery?

Any ideas? Thanks

It seems that I lost all or partial administrator privileges to perform certain tasks such as this....but I'm definitely the administrator account and by all appearances I should have these privilages.

***UPDATE***
Right now I'm trying to run a clean boot to determine if Avast or Zonealarm are causing these issues and when I go to msconfig and disable all startup processes and services and hit apply, zonealarm and avast still remain checked.

I would wait another day & se if anyone else comes up with anything, but my inclination would be to cut your losses & format & reinstall

I doubt that there is an easy way out of this one
