Strange things and very slow computer
My Dell W/64 computer has become very slow - Takes nearly 6 minutes to boot fully, with CPU running at top all that time. There are some 950 locked files that have shown up, and even when computer has been going for 30 minutes or more nearly everything is sluggish.

I am reluctant to buy into one of these "speed up" web sites and anxious about leaving it with a service department where I have no information nor discussion. I will appreciate some guidance. Thanks

Probably the surest and quickest way to determine whether hardware or software problem, and to fix if software, is to reinstall Windows fresh or "recover to factory defaults."

If you are not ready to do that try uninstalling AVG and run the AVG Remover.

Run a disk check and then defrag the partition on which Windows is installed.

I may not have any other ideas on this, but others probably will.

Thank you. I think the second alternative is less dismal, though clearly the first would do the job. My age and surgical history have deprived me of much of my competence and confidence, so I would have to take the box in to have that done. In that case how do I choose my tech? Is there some qualifying organization the way accountants have CPA, physicians have specialty boards, etc.? I am in Seattle, by the way.

Get recommendations and horror stories from people you know who have used technical people or computer shops in the area. Best Buy's Geek Squad can certainly handle that chore. Some shops are excellent (professional, honest, fair, etc.) while others are the opposite.

If you want to do the install/recover you will not be the first person we have helped. Probably Dell has the information you need for your particular model, and we can fill in the gaps. The info should be on a pamphlet you got with the computer and/or on Dell's web site.
