I have a new build with Windows 7 64 bit. I am trying to install Java. I have downloaded it and tried to load it. I get to the installing Java screen and nothing happens. I don't understand. What could be the problem?

Try downloading it from HERE and installing it offline.

Uninstall all previous versions of Java and try again. You can use JavaRA to remove Java.


If no luck,


Try installing Java in Safe Mode.

First of all, the Wndows Installer service doesn't work in Safe Mode. So, you'll need to download SafeMSI.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. In the Advanced Boot Options menu, choose Safe Mode with Networking.

Run SafeMSI.

Try installing Java again.

There isn't a version of Java on the computer. Could there be a problem with Windows installer? I have loaded a lot of software since this is a new computer.

I can't get to safe mode. I have tried F8 and F11.

You're not looking at the right place.

Try the following:

Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box.

Type msconfig

Press Enter.

Follow the instructions to reboot into Safe Mode with the help of the System Configuration utility.

Under the Boot tab, select Safe Boot, and tick Network as well.

Click Apply followed by OK, and restart the computer. You should be in Safe Mode with Networking.

Next, run SafeMSI and try installing Java again.

Well my friend. That worked like a charm. But why didn't want to load normally?

There can be a number of reasons. Something was preventing the installation from proceeding normally. It could be an antivirus or a firewall. Java needs the Internet to install. If a firewall is blocking outgoing Java requests, it will stop the installation process. A third party firewall will normally ask for that permission and remember it for subsequent requests from the same application. Safe Mode will only load the bare minimum of software and drivers that are required for the operating system to work. So, no antivirus or firewall...

Then again, it could simply be something in your Windows 7 security features. Microsoft has made it so complicated with Windows 7 and Vista! No need to ask me why I'm sticking with Windows XP 'till the end!
