Solved: Slow browser
My computer is slow loading

I've checked msconfig and only have the following

M/S windows mobile Device Center
Intel(R) Common User Interface
Intel(R) Common User Interface
Intel(R) Common User Interface
M/S Security Client
Windows Live Messenger.
and Avast Antivirus which I loaded this morning and which after I delete it from here, comes back again.
Though it has been slow prior to that.

I am using Win 7 & Google 21,0.1180..89m

I have checked with Malabytes and SuperAntiSpyware and even Windows Defender. All is ok.

Hope that is enough information.

You cannot delete programs by unchecking it in msconfig, you can only disable it from starting when you login.

Lunalander, I know that using misconfig only stops the program from starting up at logon.
I was just informing you what was left in msconfig.

Gurutech - my computer is set to run a defrag every Wednesday., but I have done another one now,

I experienced slow down with Chrome also last week. Then I disabled some plugins and it was normal again. Go to "aboutlugin"

If you have Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast both installed, you need to get rid of one of them.

Multiple antivirus programs will fight each other and bog down a computer.

Use the Task manager and end the process for a few of the programs on that list. If your computer returns to a normal speed, then the program that you ended was the problem which caused your PC to run slow.

If it's your browser that is slow, are you using a portable browser? Browsers on a flash drive tend to run slower if you haven't done stuff like disabled the cache, etc.

That's BAD advice to give without the person knowing which processes are crucial and need to run.

Start by uninstalling one of the antivirus programmes. I haven't tried either of the ones you have, but from what I understand Microsoft Security Essentials is light, and I know you can set how much of your system resources you want it to use. Since you're looking to speed things up, that might be the best one to keep.

When you've done that, reboot your computer, and see if that's made any difference.

Ok will delete Avira, but if I leave Microsoft Security Essentials on - it can't be updated. I wrote to another forum about this, but havent heard back specificially.

What I had asked them was "
As per instructions from Windows Essentials, (see attachment)

The error message read
"Security Essentials couldn't complete the virus and spyware definitions update on 9912 because of an internet or network connectivity problem"

I printed this second attachment out today, tho it doesnt show the whole page.

I was just thinking if I was dependent on M/S Security Essentials, then I'd need to be able to update it. Any thoughts?

Have you had both antivirus programmes for a while, or did you just add one recently? It could be that Avira is preventing the update.

If you prefer, you can keep Avira, and uninstall MSE, but it's possible MSE will update after you get rid of Avira. You'll just have to try and see. Did the other forum know you were running two antiviruses?

1. Ive had MSE for ages, with Avast, and it was letting viruses in so I went to AVG, but this forum said Arvira program was better. I uninstalled AVG the other day and installed Avirus, have uninstalled that now. It says I am not protected (now) I even uninstalled WSE and reinstalled it.

2. If I uninstalled MSE, will I still be able to access Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Messenger etc?
I dont have Avirus now and still getting the error msg. I can't recall if MSE was ok while I had Avast on. I'm led to believe other people have the problem - could it be to do with Google Chrome (which I use sometimes) I just (this minute), did another update, same story. The only thing I have not tried is deleting and reinstalling WSE without Avira, AVG & Avast but I can't do it right now as I'm going out and don't want to leave the computer unprotected (tho it is already saying that) I'll be back in about 2 hrs.

The other forum knew I had (at the time) Avast and MSE

Did you use the special uninstall tool for AVG?

http://www.avg.com/ww-en/utilities

If not, it may be still interfering with things.

You can't go without an antivirus, so you'll have to pick one and reinstall.

MSE has nothing to do with Windows live mail etc., so shouldn't affect anything.
