Desktop Customization in Windows 7 Ultimate
I just upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate and have a question about Desktop Customizing. The old feature where you could drag a folder all the way to the edge of the screen and it would dock it as a sidebar, I want that feature back and was wondering if anyone new of a hack or something that I could due to get that functionality back?

I know that it seems minuscule, but I have tons of icons that I use and HATE having my desktop full of icons, so I like to sort and organize icons with the sidebar. I have tried some of those sidebar gadgets and I don't like them at all so please don't just say to download one of those unless it's one that very closely mimics what I'm talking about.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you all for your time.

Sorry .. In W7 you can only make a new task bar .. In the Task Bar .. Where it can get crowded.
Parking it on any edge of your Screen(s) is no longer allowed.

At least with a new Task Bar .. In the task bar ..
You can drag a file to the Icon to open it in the App without holding the shift key.

Have you looked at Rocket doc .. But I don't think it's what your looking for.

Thank you for the reply, that really sucks since I liked that feature but I'll come up with something else. Hopefully someone will come up with a registry hack or program that will bring this function back.

Hi, Please take time to look over this post

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/10...hemes-roundup/

Lots of things to beef up Win7 and do customizing....check out down the list > JumpLists, it looks like a useful-to-you item.

Does this look like anything useful.....?

NOPE .. And I've been looking for several months.
I can tell you how to hack the registry to get a descent sized shortcut arrow ..
or Customize the Right click context menus ... Or how to install Vista's Mail in W7.

If this is the only feature you're missing .. Then you weren't spoiled by XP enough.

I miss the heck out of that.

I parked my Desktop and quick launch there, then unchecked "show desktop Items" and quick launch, it kept my messy desktop hidden and gave more space to the taskbar for other things.

I like W7 but it seems like they removed too much for no reason.

I guess I could go back to Vista.........not!

You might like Windows 7, over XP … As long as you do NOT ….

► Know the difference in the Display of ... And the purpose for ... Icons and Thumbnails …
► Want to Customize your right click context menus …
► Operate multiple monitors thru a KVM switch …
► Want to make a new task bar and park it on any edge of your Screen(s) …
► Want to manually organize the contents of a folder …
► Expect an Office 2003 file Icon to stay on your desktop where you put it …
► Expect the new Windows Movie Maker to have all the features the old one …
► Mind the loss of OE’s Backup/Recovery from a wab file …
► Expect Windows 7 to remember the size and position of Windows.

I don’t understand all the excitement about Jump Lists.
They look like a fancy way of using MRUs
I’d rather have a quick path to where I want to go .. Than look back at where I’ve been.

Enable your Privacy ..
And the Jump lists disappear .. Along with the Programs in the start panel.

It looks like it’s going to be a long time before I leave XP.

I hope I don't have to take up fishing for a hobby again ...

I have XP pro 64 slipstreamed .. Ready for my next computer.
That'll fix the new Task Bar problem .. and a few others.
