Solved: Windows Live Mail
I have a client that is using Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail and for some reason there is a problem with this.

On the server tab I have chosen all combination of choices of how to set up the pop and SMTP settings. Called Embarq, which is now centurylink.net, and they can't tell me how to solve the problem. Even tried all combinations of settings with them, even connected me with their Mail Server tech and still no work.

It seems it will work for a few hours then it just errors out. Get the error messages incorrect login, secure Authentication errors; depending on how the settings are set.

Actually regardless how the settings are it seems to work as long as it is set for "My Server Requires Authentication". But it only works for a bit and then it stops working again until I spend a few hours trying to find a solution and then for no reason it will start working again for a while and then it starts over again.

This is a new computer, not one upgraded and the user is new too. Her first computer and she doesn't understand a thing about this so I'd like to keep her off of internet mail until she is more comfortable with this.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to solve this problem. I thought about using Outlook but basically the settings for Outlook would be the same and I'm afraid the problems will persists.

Try another email client, it could be a problem with live mail, or your email provider, they just won't admit they are having problems. Using another client will reveal this.

If both clients have the same problem, then it is your email provider.

Sometimes a corrupted non-Windows firewall or security suite will cause this type of problem with browsers. Suggest that if there is such a beast on the system to uninstall it (and use the appropriate clean-up or removal tool if there is one). The application can then be reinstalled after testing.

A good test before doing this is to immediately do a reboot when the problem surfaces. If a reboot always fixes the problem (at least briefly) then we are probably dealing with some kind of corruption on the system. If reboot does not fix it, then I'd forget my suggestion and stick with Mumbodog said.

It is a brand new computer so other than the windows firewall there is no security installed except AVG and the firewall is disabled at this time.

Could be a corrupt file and I'll try chkdsk to see if this will help solve the problem.

Actually your suggestion is better than Mumbodog's because his suggestion isn't a fix or even a way to solve the problem but just a workaround.

I like to solve problems that are there and not just install new software that may or may not recreate the same problem and then just have more files on the computer. To me a good solution is worth more than any workaround even if it takes days longer to fix.

Thanks for a good suggestion, I will give it a try. I never gave thought to a corrupt being a new system but it is possible that a file didn't copy correctly.

Have a great day and thanks...

New Windows systems often come with Norton or McAfee or similar installed. Often the new owner doesn't ever realize it's there, or thinks that because the trial subscription wasn't started the security suite is not running. It is!

AVG (the free anti-virus I assume) shouldn't be causing this, but it does usually scan incoming email so I would probably go to the trouble of uninstalling that also.

By the way, if you like trivia, I grew up by Blue Ridge Summit--20 miles west of Gettysburg.

Was not suggested as a "workaround", sorry you took it that way. More of a method to troubleshoot.

After spending more time with embarq tech I've come to the conclusion Embarq (century.link) isn't set up to work with Windows live mail. It works part time, then it just stops for a while then starts again.

So if it were the machine it should either work all the time or not work all the time so I've come to the conclusion the problem is on their end. And we know they will never admit they have a problem so for now this one as far as I am concerned is closed.
