Windows 7 Freeze/Reboot
I had a custom PC built less than a month ago. Basically from day 1 I have been getting random freezes/reboots. Most of the time the system becomes unresponsive and requires a manual reboot. This happens at totally random times (at least 10 times this morning). I've searched the net for a solution (Windows tech site has no answers). Every time the event viewer shows a kernel-power error (event ID 41). All drivers are up to date and Windows was a new install on a brand new system. I'm tearing my hair out so any help would be heaven sent.

Here's my system spec.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 6.1.7600 Build 7600
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping 2.66GHz (Nehalem)
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (socket 1366) DDR3
Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3 (1600MHz)
System Drive - Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB SATA-II SSHD
Storage Drive - Seagate Barracuda 1TB 32MB Cache SATA-II
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK)

Here's a HJT log.

What pw supply do you have installed. List brand and wattage. If possible, post a link to your psu.

Next the ram you are using needs a higher than stock vdimm [ram voltage] set in the bios. Did you do this task?

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, missed the power supply off the specs. It's a Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK)

I haven't changed anything in the bios. The PC was custom built by OverclockersUK so I would assume they set the bios correctly if required. Is this easy to check? I've been trying their support line for 2 days but they're always busy. I've run the Windows memory checker and no problems were reported.

Before changing the vdimm, run memtest for at least 1hr to see if there are any memory issues. Download memtest and make the boot CD.

Next post your temps. You can use either the gigabyte utility for checking temps or check them in the bios after the system has been running for a while. To find out where to check in the bios, read your manual.

Downloaded and ran Memtest86+ v4.00. No errors were reported. Checked system temperatures in BIOS (the Gigabyte EasyTune utility does not work). This is after the machine had been on for over an hour after running Memtest.
Results as follows;

Current System Temp: 38
Current CPU Temp: 35
Current MCH Temp: 44
Current GPU Temp: 36

These values remained constant.

Thanks again for your help.

Have you brought the system back to the shop that built it for you?

It seems you have picked quality parts however it is always possible to have one fail.

As a test, run the system in safe mode. If it locks up in safe mode, it is almost always a hardware problem. If it runs fine in safe mode, it is almost always a driver or software issue.

I've had no chance to take the system back due to working long hours (the shop is over 100 miles away). I finally got an e-mail from their support team today after making a complaint. They suggested basically what you have, also to set back the overclock they performed prior to sending the machine out. I've done all that and will see what happens.

I have tried running in safe mode but the only problem is the freezes are just so random. Today I haven't had a single freeze, but yesterday I must have had 20 or so. The only common factor is the kernel-power error in the event log. When I ran in safe mode for an hour or so there were no freezes, but that could just have been a good day.

I'll let you know if their support team come up with anything.

*UPDATE*

During my research on this problem there seemed to be a problem with Kaspersky, realted to kloehk.dll, adialhk.dll and sbhook64.dll. People mostly experienced crashes/freezes in Windows 7. Their support team have at last confirmed a known issue and sent me a fix. I've run the fix and will now see what happens.

Don't know if this would be helpful to others, but I would advise anyone having similar problems as me and who have Kaspersky installed, to send a query to Kaspersky support. Mine was a common/known issue which has taken them about 10 days to come up with a fix.

The Kaspersky fix has not worked, and has now stopped me updating my antivirus databases either automatically or manually. I've logged this with Kaspersky.

Sadly the random freezes are still happening. Really had enough of this now. Is there anything else I could try?

RedSam, I have had similar freezing issues recently with my custom-built PC.

I took it back to the company that built it for testing and they found nothing wrong with it. They suggested that it may be a power issue at my house (the PC not getting enough power from wherever it is connected).

I ended up moving my PC to another part of the house and since then I have had no more freezing issues.

A UPS may also be a solution if there are power issues.

Hope this helps.

I had a freezing problem with a Clean install of W7.
Checking the MS updates .. I found an update for the SATA Driver.
This seemed to fix the freezing problem.
