The State of MPEG4 support/viability
Just wondering, its been 'bout a month now and I've only been using the Divx and Xvid flavors but how has the native support for MPEG4 files in Windows 7 been? I've had the experience that, while the playback quality at the default setting has been tweaked just right for outstanding viewing, Windows Media Player will not play any file larger than 2 gigs (that old barrier yet again) and if I jump around on the quick seek bar, AV sync becomes a problem and nothing beyond restarting the file repairs it.

If I reboot into XP, WMP11 has no problem playing any size Xvid file so far up to 9.67 gigs (an experimental 1920x1080 file), and I can jump around on the instant seek bar like a Mexican hat dancer without a problem, except for about a quarter to one half second delay between seek and play with the 9.67 gig file, which is on a network location, so I think that is pretty acceptable.

So is this experience common or anomalous? I hope this isn't due to built-in DRM in Vista and Seven because if it is common, its probably here to stay.

Install this codec pack (as long as no other pack has been installed yet).

See if playback is better.

I have Win 7 set up on another system now, all very similar hardware and applications and the video performance is mimicking that of XP so that's good. I'll definitely give that codec pack a try on the other system when I get around to booting back into 7 again.
