Remove XP?
Hey guys,

I've dual booted Winxp (c) and Win7 (W). How do I go about deleting XP without having to do a clean install for the entire hd?

Use easy bcd to do this, download and install it in W7

http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 Was designed for Vista but works just fine on W7

Right click on the installer and choose run as admin, once installed run the program and go to:

1. "Change Settings" Tab, set the default OS to Windows 7, hit Save settings button, then in entry based settings, choose windows 7 from the drop down box, then choose C:\ from the drive drop down box, hit save settings.

2. Then go to the "Add remove entries" Tab, highlight the XP (may be labeled previous windows...) and hit the delete button, then hit the save button.

Leave easy bcd open for now

Go to Control Panel>Sysyem and Security>Admin Tools>Computer Management
Open disk management and set the windows 7 partition as the active partition, if it it is not already, if XP was installed first then that partition will be the active partition and must be changed, in the bottom pane right click on the W7 partition and select "set as active partition", it will give a warning, continue with changing it.

Now go back to easy bcd and do the following

3. Go to Diagnostics Center Tab, then tick the "recreate missing/deleted boot files" radio button, then hit rescue my system button.

You should reboot the PC now to see if all went well, when you get back into Windows 7, go back to disk management and in the lower pane right click on the XP partition and select "delete partition" it may ask you to force it, say yes. Now you have an unallocated partition that can be merged back into the W7 partition if you like, or you can format it for storage.

If for some reason W7 does not boot after making BCD changes, you may have to run a W7 startup repair, sometimes this has to be done twice in a row to get it booting again.

In disk management it will say, you can read it in the upper pane (status column) or in the lower pane look at the W7 partition. Is it labeled "Active"

Do a full screen when you open disk management so you can read it.

So, in the lower pane, you don't see the "Mark partition as active" in the menu when you right click on the W7 partition?

Well then that means W7 partition Is the Active partition, so you don't need to do anything in disk management.

I answered that earlier.
